On March 7, 1986, Founding Father Baltazar Mendoza Madrigal called together a special meeting with some of the Hispanic students at the University of Iowa. The meeting was held at the Chicano Indian American Cultural Center at the same University. Its purpose was to discuss the need and feasibility of creating a new social fraternity with an emphasis on Hispanic Cultures. The following Brothers attended the preliminary meeting: Founding Father Thomas Carasquillo, Founding Father Manuel Chavarria, Founding Father Luis Jimenez, and Founding Father Luis Marquez.

The enthusiasm in favor of the Fraternity was so encouraging that word spread throughout the University Campus about the Fraternity. As expected, the following preliminary meeting was attended by thirteen (13) additional new members: Founding Father Mario Buendia, Founding Father Enrique Carbajal, Founding Father Rudolfo Garza, Founding Father Jose Fong, Founding Father Eric Montes, Founding Father Olakunle Oyeyemi, Founding Father Kuy Ou, Founding Father Jaime Ramirez, Founding Father Olivero Rivera, Founding Father Juan Jose Rojas-Cardona, Founding Father Eugenio Soria, Founding Father Juan Valdez, and Founding Father Ricardo Zamudio.

From this meeting the members received information regarding steps towards recognition as a National Fraternity. The following Friday, April 4, 1986, formalized the Organization. Elections were held and the first executive committee was elected. The first President was Founding Father Baltazar Mendoza Madrigal, the first Vice President was Founding Father Jaime Ramirez, the first Secretary was Founding Father Luis Jimenez, and the first treasurer was Founding Father Eric Montes. It was decided that the Fraternity would be recognized as SIGMA LAMBDA BETA FRATERNITY. Therefore, this date, April 4, 1986, was unanimously declared the official founding date of SIGMA LAMBDA BETA FRATERNITY.

On April 26, 1986, the members were officially initiated into the Fraternity at the Danforth Chapel at the University of Iowa. Founding Father Luis Jimenez was the first to be formally initiated into the Fraternity.

On May 3, 1986, the First Annual Before Finals Cinco De Mayo Spring Celebration was held at the Iowa City Recreation Center. Due to lack of time for that year the members voted to keep things as they were until the next semester.

The following year promised to be a year of much progress and expansion for SIGMA LAMBDA BETA FRATERNITY, INC. The ALPHA CHAPTER was off to a good start.

The summer of 1986 was a good indication of such progress. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Founding Father Juan Jose Rojas-Cardona, the Fraternity acquired its corporation status. A special note of gratitude went out to Attorney Ron Johnson for his much needed legal assistance. Through his hard work and perseverance, Founding Father Rojas-Cardona tallied up a list of notables whom were ear marked as Honorary Members. The affirmative response from such members only served to attest to the greatness and perpetual existence of SIGMA LAMBDA BETA FRATERNITY, INC.

In addition to these summer advancements, the official Board of Directors was installed.  These members include: Mary Peterson, John Chadima, Ester Materon, Arturo Sierra, Helen Ryan, Luis Vasquez, Founding Father Juan Jose Rojas-Cardona, Founding Father Jaime Ramirez (later replaced by Founding Father Luis Jimenez due to schedule conflicts), Rusty Barcelo,Claudio Hidalgo, and Founding Father Baltazar Mendoza Madrigal.

During the Fall Semester of 1986, the goals of the Fraternity were to stabilize itself and reacknowledge its goals. A publicity campaign was undertaken to spread the word of Sigma Lambda Beta. One of its major acquisitions was that of securing a regular section in the newly published Spanish newspaper entitle "Voces." The fall semester was time of involvement and planning.
