Assignment 5, Part 1: Coffee Sites Comparison

As we navigated the two websites for coffee lovers in class, my partner and I got to make detailed comparisons between two sites, and discussed about it. After carefully inspecting the two sites, I finally drew a conclusion that the new version is better than the old one in several aspects, as discussed below.

1. Organization
   First thing you notice about the original site is its poor organization. It does not utilize the whole page by putting all texts on the top of the page and left aligned, thus leaving too much blank space. Plus, on the ¡°Are you a true coffee lover?¡± page, I found the inconsistency in numbering. In the middle, sentences numbered with alphabets are not indented so that it¡¯s hard to distinguish whether it¡¯s subordinate to sentence 3 or not, whereas they are clearly indented in the new version.
   
   
2. Graphics
   The images of each page of the old version seem not to match very well with the background since it does not blend with the background color. Plus, the location of the images is not consistent. In a new version, all images are left aligned and appropriately related to the text.
   
   
3. Background
   The original site has different backgrounds on each page, and the background on the ¡°Quotes from olden times¡± is too dark so it makes hard for me to read the text, and also makes my eyes get tired. On the other hand, the new version is consistent with each background, and its texture gives a warm and mild feeling to the site.
   
   
4. Links
   In the old version, it is quite irritating to see that the location of the links is all different on every page. Furthermore, the links are all in caps except those on the home page. Plus, links on the ¡°Other coffee sites¡± page are not working, and is not a target link either. The revised version, however, has links on the same location on every page, so it looks neater and is easier to navigate. And links are all targeted to another page, so we don¡¯t need to go back and forth between pages.
   
   

Overall, the revised site is significantly improved in graphic and organization, thus better than the old one. What I like about both sites is that the links of other coffee sites on old and new versions are all annotated, providing explanation about the each site, which is very helpful to the viewers. And images are all related to the contents of the page, and suits with the purpose of the site very well.
