Assignment 11
Internet Use Survey
How often and in what ways do you use the Internet in your other classes? Do you find articles, access databases, download graphics and multimedia files, or surf pages related to your topic of research?
- Do you use the Net for other classes? If so, which are they? Describe the course and how you used the Net for whatever assignment or project. Be specific.
Yes, I use the Net for my other courses, too.
In Nutrition Education and Counseling Practice class, we were assigned to surf through the nutrition counseling sites and analyze its content and quality in front of class. I found out that the majority of counseling sites were not very actively operated except some famous sites.
We also use the Net in Technical English class. We surf translation company websites to find resources and articles and do research for our business proposal project. Since many translation services are based online, it was very helpful to surf through those sites.
Lastly, in Screen English class, we use the Net for watching movie clips and get the script from various movie sites. I also read movie critics through the Net.
- How helpful was the Net? Was it more useful than if you had used conventional means, e.g., finding books and periodicals in the library?
In terms of saving time and effort, using the Net as a resource is much convenient and easier.
However, I'm not sure about the quality of information. Some resources on the Net are unreliable because they're not verified. For in-depth reserach, I would rather go to library since it provides more credible resources.
- Would it help if core classes in your major, or general education classes at Ewha were online?
For my major, online courses would not be always effective. But yes, it would have been a help if they provide both online and offline classes. Combining an off-line and online classes is proven to be more efficient in a way that it allows an active communication and feedback among students
- Would you like to see other English or other language courses online? If so, what would they be?
Yes, if the course involves using the Internet and getting resources from the Net. Although I prefer offline for language course, there are certain benefits when they are online. Students wouldn't miss the words the teacher says, and they can repeat and practice by themselves. I took German course before, and I think that course would have been better if it were online.
