I was wondering if anyone would know the value of 2 pins I have that were withdrawn from sale. Apparently there aren't many in existence. They are the gold # 610345 and silver # 610345 logo with rings.

I have never paid more than $20 for a pin, except for older pins from say, 1936 or earlier. Why would I? If I can't afford a pin that's on offer at a swapmeet I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Patience is the key. I've got lucky a couple of times and s
ored some great pins. I have more fun trying to chase up pins for my cycling collection and mascot collection. Older pins from 1988 to 1998 can be picked up very cheap and make a great addition to my collection. I'm in this for the long run and I'm sure I
will still be buying pins and trading pins in twenty years time! (And still having fun!)

Connie,
I've to say if you started 6 months ago, you are not new! I started when they release the 700 days to go. But since then, I got many pins now, and attend every swapmeet in Sydney. I do not sell pins to collectos, I usually just trade. I never spend over $
0 for a pin, the most expensive pin I ever bought was the 900 days and 899 sleeps, which both cost me $60 each. (2 weeks ago) However, I'm lucky to swap some of the good pins, like the Benson House Licensee pin, Ansett plane, ...etc. Sure we can't get ev
ry pin we like, some of them are crazy expensive. But the fun bit is , say I bought 2 of the Benson House 600 days to go, at $11.95 each. Now they both worth $100 each, so I can use my spare to swap with pins that I like.
I do not work for sponsors, but some of the sponsor pins are very cheap. ($15-20) You can easily trade them with your spares.
But I have to admit that some people are trying to rip collectos off. On the other hand, some of the dealers are very nice. They just sell their pins in market value. (Hey! They have to make a living out of it!)
Last time I went to a swapmeet, someone holding the new Australian rolling paper pin. I know this pin is expensive, but that guy think he is holding a diamond, saying "I want that set, that pin, plus this two, and those two....." Without letting him to f
nish off his suggestion, I said "no thanks!". No doubt many people work for sponsors got such an advantage.........
Anyway, as I'm just a normal collector without special channels to get pins. I need to queue up to buy my them!

I have to agree with the comments that have been made previously regarding the often rediculous prices asked for pins. Being a relatively 'new' collector, I have been somewhat dismayed to find that I will probably never obtain earlier released countdown p
ns and limited edition pins as I am not financially able to pay $100 plus for them. Having attended my first (and probably last) swapmeet recently, it seems to me that the people with large numbers of each pin to sell , at inflated prices, are not genuine
collectors, but people out to make an easy buck. I only started collecting Sydney Olympic Pins 6 months ago and only ever buy 2 pins as they are released. One for my collection, and one to swap (or so I thought), but I haven't had much luck with the swapp
ng part as yet. But I will continue to buy my pins for my collection, I'm happy with that. Also, just a quick word about the Parramatta Olympic Store sleepout, sounds like great fun, but unfortunately I am not able to attend as I have children to get off
o school on Monday morning. Next time make it a Friday or Saturday so we can all come !

Once on the soapbox it's hard to get off.......In response to Les and Davids comments: The issue of availability of pins to the broader community seems to be in the process of being resolved, to some degree, with the Olympic Stores online and telephone o
dering systems being put in place. Unfortunately there will always be pin releases and special events where Olympic pins are available for which not all of us will be able to attend. This is a phenomenon that has probably existed in Olympics past and wi
l do so for into the future as well. The reality of the situation is that over the next 18 months, even more than in the last 18 months, we will see a proliferation of special release pins, short run pins, the hard to get ones. Only a small few collecto
s will really get all of these pins in large quantities as they have the time and resources to make multiple purchases at multiple outlets, travel all over town in search of special pins, and line up for hours at 4 am on a weekday morning (Note: I'm not k
ocking this, I think the camp out should be a lot of fun, but I just can't take part). For such a situation some simple economics can be applied: A small number of people will be holding the majority of a desirable pin. The demand will rise and hence t
e price. A further look at the economics of the situation is that in the lead up to the Olympics and especially during the Games, pin prices inflate to ridiculous levels. It is my belief that these price rises are a result of the combination of consumer
demand and dealer greed.
While it is understandable that collectors sell off extra pins in order to recoup expenses and hence "pay for their collection" we are all seeing situations where these prices are being set with no reference to true pin values and to what the market expe
ts or is willing to pay. Unfortunately those minority of pin traders who hold the majority of pins are able to set such prices because there will always be one sucker who will pay $800 for a pin. The greatest example of such nonsense was the Onion rings
pin mania that occurred in Atlanta. Not even an Olympic pin, the Varsity Onion rings pin fetched prices of up to US$3000!!! You may be able to buy one now for around US$100-200. This is indicative of a false economy and one that will surely cause more
han a few heartbreaks once the Games are over. Think of the person who will look back at a pin which cost $5 to produce and for which they paid $300 while they wonder about where they are going to make next months mortgage repayments! Take a look around
ebay and the trader pages from the States, there are very few pins for sale at over US$20-50. People there have realised the folly in such ovespending. Many have remarked about the high prices of Sydney pins, they can't believe it. It seems that we Aus
ies just love to be drawn into such collectable frenzies, who has a friend or a younger brother who a few years ago spend $200 on baskeball card packets in the hope of "finding" a Shaquille Oneal card worth $80? whithout trying to sound smug I am glad I
ave bought very few pins at swap meets, the ones I have bought have been reasonably priced and bought for a specific collecting purpose. I much prefer to trade or swap pins for those I am looking for, and I know that if I can't get the pin now I will fin
a way to get it during the Games or afterward.
Footnotes: I reckon there are only about 2000-3000 real Olympic pin collectors here in Australia, when the pin manufacturers come up with limited edition pins with mintages of 10000 and these pins sell out you know that a lot of people will be holding a
ot of worthless pins once the Games are over.
Also, I am looking for a Channel 7 swimming historical Atlanta pin. I will pay $1,000,000,000, give you my first born and my right arm for it. Or we can arrange a more reasonable swap, any interested?

I know that discussion forums are no places to abuse individuals or groups of people however I find myself in agreement with Tom's comments and rather upset with Chris' response. I was at the swapfest in question and what upset me more than the fact that
Olympic Store Management looked like they had set up shop in the middle of the pinworx was the fact that they had rather large amounts of stock on hand to sell. Chris states that Olympic Store staff are only allowed to purchase one pin each and yet he ha
several (I'm sorry I didn't count exactly how many) of the Olympic Store 600 days pins for sale.
My message to Chris is no matter how you aquired these pins and whether it was indeed fair, you occupy a privaleged position amongst the pin trading community. It is up to you if you wish to not only be fair in your pin trading and dealing but to also be
seen to be fair. As we will no doubt see in the upcoming NSW elections, people remember bad impressions far more effectively than the good ones. Working on having a good name in the pintrading community involves a great deal of give mixed in with your fa
r share of take. Without naming names, we haver already seen traders and sellers here in Sydney developing less than favourable reputations due to their greed and unscrupulous behaviour. Rather than being upset with Tom you can use it as an indication a
to how people are reacting to the mobile Olympic Store that pops up at swap meets.
Add my impressions to that too now.

In regards to a posting by Tom, to let you know, the majority of Staff and Management from The Olympic Store at Parramatta are infact pin collectors (surprise) and collect, trade and sometimes even sell pins just like everyone else. I can assure you that
o staff member in any of The Olympic Stores (Centrepoint and Airport included)is given special treatment, in the 99.99% of cases staff have less right to pins that customers (no staff member is ever allowed to purchase more than two of the same limited ed
tion pin and they do not get the opportinity to line up again). As for what staff do with their pins outside of work is up to them. You complain about inflated prices, what about the two gorls at the swap meet who were asking $800 for their 1000 days to g
pins?
I think that insted of bickering umoungst ourselves, why dont all of the pin collectors get together and help each other out and show some of the real Olympic Spirit that the Games are all about.

To Les and anyone else that is interested - In relation to the 550 Days, although they are only available from The Olympic Stores (as they do have their own Exclusive range of products including clothing), all customers are notified that telephone orders
RE accepted from opening time to give others in Country NSW and around Australia an opportunity to get their pins. Other Olympic Stores are planned for major cities later this year around Australia, but for now if you need to increase your pin collection,
you can do so by making a telephone order.

Once again I have to agree with Les. Live anywhere other than Sydney and your out of luck. On Valentines day I rocked up to the local K-Mart store only to be given strange looks and told to call on Monday as they didn't get pins delivered on the week end.
I did this and was told that they would not be getting any of these pins. They get some limited pins and don't get others. When are they going to get all of the releases? Also what happened to Days to go and Sleeps pins being on sale for 24 hours only? I
an still buy 600 days to go and 599 sleeps at the local David Jones Store! I'm not finished yet. I hate it when you go to a shop that does get the limited pins (Valentines day, torch relay etc) on the day of a pin release only to be told when the doors op
n that all the pins they have were pre sold days before there official release. Still more. I have been to a shop that had no pins on the day of its release only to have them at inflated prices the next day. I don't see how a pin can be worth $10 one day
nd $35 the next! I went into one store in Sydney and spotted a Coca Cola Olympic pin in bronze and inquired what was its price? I knew that they had just sold one to a gentleman I was just speaking to for $20 and I was told they didn't know and they were
rying to contact the boss to find out. I told them I knew they had sold one for $20 and their excuse was that he had bought another pin and $20 for the Coke pin seemed a fair price. Strange ideas some people. I left this store and I will never go back to
t. It does make you wonder if pin collecting is really worth it sometimes. I am losing interest at a rapid rate.Well I have had my grizzle for the day. Happy collecting because I know I won't!
