Torrin was a founding member of Riot City and played in the band between 12 May 2001 and 11 May 2002.
Torrin grew up in the inner-city shanty suburb of Woolloomooloo, and from a young age was fed a healthy diet of British and Jamaican music from both his own and his parents generation. Spending most of his time with local youths who sometimes had a bent for the shadier side of the law, he was exposed to Sydney's subcultures of the '80s, especially skinheads, "I really liked their sharp dress sense, their great taste in music and their sense of camaraderie". Too many close calls with the law prompted Torrin to join the Navy in the later part of the 80's, where he specialised in photography for 11 years. He is a a lover of all underground music, favouring psychobilly, punk, jazz and, of course, old skool ska, his favourite muso's including: Prince Buster, Skatalites, Bob Marley, Batmobile, Specials, Madness, Stray Cats, Lee Perry, Hoodoo Gurus, Massive Attack, James Brown, Guana Batz, the Quakes, the Clash, the Meteors, John Coltrane, Booker T & the MG's, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Karma County, Cruel Sea, the Clouds, Last Hemeroids and just about any 80's Aussie garage. Talk about diverse! "I first found out about Riot City from Crappy. The idea of an old skool ska band had appealed to me for a long time, but had only played with dodgy acid jazz and funk bands. I was so chuffed that he invited me to join, that I grabbed all the crew I could from the psychobilly outfit I was forming, and dragged them over to Riot City". Torrin now lives and works as a freelance graphic artist and photographer in Sydney's inner west, and can be regularly found at night in Sydney's better night spots, Deans Café in Kings Cross or the Duke in Enmore. Big thanks to my musical mentors; Sandy Klose, David Siedel, Neville Whitehead and Marco Agostino. |
