This line of the VanPee family has been assembled with considerable speculation and circumstantial evidence.  Please note that due to a lack of civil records from the late 1600’s and the 1700’s, as well as the incomplete nature of the church records from that time period, certain assumptions were required in order to construct the following genealogy.  While it is possible that written documents do exist, such as wills, by which this lineage can be confirmed, I do not have access to such items.  As such, anyone using the information on this branch of the VanPee family should consult the original records and form their own opinions, caveat emptor.

 

While it might be possible to assemble further branches of this lineage, I have imposed a limit as to the degree of speculation I would consider.  As detailed in the following section, a case has been made for the parentage of Sebastianus VanPee, as well as his descendants.  Based on the baptismal records for the children of Engelbertus VanPee and Anna Spreutels, where Engelbertus is given the suffix “Jr”, it can be reasoned that Sebastianus is the son of Engelbertus VanPee.

 

Additionally, there is another Engelbertus VanPee listed in the church records, married to an Amelberge Rogiers, who are listed as having children in the 1630’s.  However, no mention is made of a son named Engelbertus.  Therefore, the present lineage will begin with the proposed parents of Sebastianus VanPee and Ann Spreutels, and not the grandparents.

 

A search of the church baptismal records for several towns and villages (Huldenberg, Neerijse, Sint-Agatha-Rode, Loonbeek, Sint-Joris-Weert, Ottenburg, Korbeek-Dijle, and Duisburg) reveal only 1 baptismal record for a Sebastianus VanPee prior to 1689.  That record lists a Sebastianus VanPee son of Engelbertus VanPee Jr and Anna Spreutles baptized on October 14, 1658 in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium. 

 

A check of the marriage records from the same towns and villages revealed only a single marriage of a Sebastianus VanPee prior to 1700.  The marriage record, dated February 13, 1689 lists a Sebastianus VanPee marring a Christina Abts in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium.  If the previously identified Sebastianus VanPee and the husband of Christina Abts are one and the same person, the date of the marriage would make him just over 30 years old at the time of the wedding.  Based on cultural norms, that age would fit well into the range of ages for men marrying for the first time in the Huldenberg region of Belgium.

 

A check of baptismal records indicated that Sebastianus is not a common name in the aforementioned regions of Belgium.  Furthermore, as only a single baptism for a Sebastianus VanPee could be found, and only a single marriage notice located (both from the same village) it can be reasoned that the son of Engelbertus VanPee Jr and Anna Spreutles was one and the same person.

 

A check of the baptismal records for the aforementioned towns and villages shows only two baptisms with a Sebastianus VanPee listed as a godparent.  The baptismal record was for Sebastianus Dewit, baptized May 3, 1684 in Huldenberg, Belgium to Antonius Dewit and Maria VanMuylder.  No direct family relationship could be found to tie the parents to Sebastianus VanPee.  The second baptism was for a Sebastianus VanPee, baptized April 23, 1696 in Neerijse, Belgium to Jacobus Goossens and Maria VanPee.  Marriage records revealed that a Jacobus Goossens and a Maria VanPee were married on February 21, 1694 in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium.  Sebastianus did have a younger sister Maria, baptized November 10, 1660 in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium, which would have made her just over 29 at the time of the wedding.  However, lacking any further details, it would be difficult at this time to tie Maria VanPee (wife of Jacobus Goossens) to Sebastianus Vanpee as a sibling.

 

Following the marriage of Sebastianus VanPee and Christina Abts, February 13, 1689 in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium, only 3 children are listed as being baptized from this couple.  Henricus, born 1690 in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium, Egidius, born 1692 in Sint-Agatha-Rode, Belgium, and Guilielmus, born 1696 in Huldenberg, Belgium.  Of these children, two had godparents with the last name of VanPee, Egidius (born 1692 with Egidus VanPee as godfather) and Guiliemus Van Pee (born 1696 with Maria VanPee as godmother).  Sebastianus had a brother and sister with those names.

 

Burial records indicate that a Sebastianus VanPee died and was buried in Ottenburg, Belgium on October 22, 1705, and a Christina Abts, widow of Sebastianus VanPee died and was buried on September 21, 1706 in Ottenburg, Belgium.  Based on the burial listings, it is known that in the early 1700’s the children of Sebastianus VanPee and Christina Abts were living in Ottenburg, Belgium.

 

Based on an examination of the baptismal records, from the early to mid 1700’s it is proposed that all three children of Sebastianus VanPee and Christina Abts survived to adulthood, married and had children.  The proposed marriages are as follows: Henricus VanPee and Maria Decock; Egidius VanPee and Maria Theresia Brion; and Guilielmus VanPee and Joanna Decock.

 

Henricus VanPee and Maria Decock are listed as having 8 children baptized in Ottenburg between 1720 and 1735.  The godparents for the children include: Egidus VanPee (for Joanna born 1722; Joanna born 1725; and Egidius born 1729), Maria Thereisa Brion (for Egidius born 1729), Guilielmus VanPee (for Guilielmus born 1723), and Joanna Decock ( for Joanna born 1722; and Joanna born 1725).  The choice of these individuals as godparents shows some relationship between the male VanPees (Henricus, Egidius, and Guilielmus).

 

The relationship is strengthened when the baptismal records for the children of Guilielmus VanPee and Joanna Decock are examined.  Guiliemus VanPee and Joanna Decock are listed as having 5 children baptized in Ottenburg, Belgium between 1731 and 1742.  Godparents for the children include: Egidus VanPee (for Egidius VanPee born 1734), Theresia Brion (for Theresia VanPee born 1737), Henricus VanPee (for Henricus VanPee born 1731) and Maria Decock (for Egidius VanPee born 1734).  These findings tend to indicate a strong family tie between the aforementioned couples.

 

Egidus vanPee and Maria Theresia Brion are listed as having 10 children baptized between 1727 and 1739.  Godparents listed in the baptismal records do not include any Guilielmus VanPee, Henricus VanPee, Joanna Decock, or Maria Decock.  Instead The VanPees listed are Egidius VanPee (for Egidius born 1727; and Theresia born 1736), Michael Joseph VanPee (for Michael VanPee born 1737), Joanna VanPee (for Brixtus VanPee born 1733) and Anna VanPee (for Joannes Baptista VanPee born 1738).

 

Egidius, Joanna and Anna are fairly common names, and they cannot be readily traced to any particular family.  Michael Joseph is however very unique and should be relatively easy to locate.  However, a search of the baptismal records do not list a single Michael VanPee born prior to 1737.  In fact, the only Michael VanPee born prior to 1740 was born to Henricus VanPee and Maria Decock.

 

Although a link based on baptismal records between Egidus VanPee (wife Maria Thersia VanPee) and Henricus VanPee (wife Maria Decock) and Guilielmus VanPee (wife Joanna Decock) cannot be established, the previously cited evidence is reasonably strong.  As such, I have decided to group these VanPee family lines with the qualifying statement that a direct relationship cannot be fully ascertained at this time due to insufficient cooberating documents.  However, circumstantial evidence tentatively leads to the conclusion that the three aforementioned VanPees were indeed brothers and the children of Sebastianus VanPee and Christina Abts.
