RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2
RFD V2.2 replaces V2.1 Release 4.
Salient features of RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2:
Uses File Allocation Table when it is OK - 1, or recovers file content from contiguous disk sectors when FAT has zeroes or was damaged - 2. Automatically does the first thing (1) for some files and the second thing (2) for some other files in a single run of the program on a folder depending upon FAT condition for each file. No more simplification in data recovery is ever possible.
Supplies Boot Record if Boot Sector of floppy is bad, accepts raw image of Root Folder if Root Folder on disk got damaged and automatically uses the FAT copy with fewer damaged sectors.
Features that are not mentioned above as automatic are user-specifiable. Do you need more?
Runs at folder level or file(s) level depending on user specification.
Exploits available remaining part of file system and saves manual sector level file recovery chores for the user.
If a virus erased or corrupted the FAT, you can make the program ignore FAT copies and still recover all your files by specifying a superpower switch. You can do without entire File Allocation Tables and recover all files intact if you have recently defragmented your file system. Defragmentation is not a requirement when you want to recover files from a floppy disk that was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it.
- Floppy Disk Recovery
Recover Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 recovers files even when (1) FAT and / or (2) Folder (including Root Folder) and / or (3) Boot Sector (floppies only) are damaged. Targets surface damage in system area - including Boot Sector of floppy disk.
- Hard Disk Recovery
Recover Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 recovers files even when (1) FAT and / or (2) Folder (including Root Folder) are damaged. Targets surface damage in system area - excluding Boot Sector of Hard Disk Drive / partition.
- Recover Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 is a folder / file(s) level data recovery software for HDD's and Floppies with ability to safeguard data against accidental reformat of HDD / Floppy. It is a wonderful alternative to sector level data recovery software for quickly recovering multiple files at the folder (directory) level instead of recovering each file at the sector level. RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 recovers all files irrespective of file types (txt, bin, database, encrypted database, or anything) and irrespective of filename extensions (.txt, .dll, .html, .gif, .com, .exe, or anything).
- If you want a disk utility that can manage "uncertainties" with respect to FAT and Root Folder (Root Directory), in particular "physical damage to FAT and / or Root Folder", RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 is the disk utility for you. Physical damage to the FAT and / or Root Folder is a scenario where backup and restore programs fail and leave you to fend for yourself because they cannot restore what they backed up to the physically damaged FAT or Root Folder.
- By using RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 you can recover files even if FAT and Root Folder both have been completely erased / damaged at the same time (as in a reformat) if the Root Folder was backed up before the damage; the backed-up Root Folder is necessary to achieve 100% data recovery. Raw folder (directory) structure extracted from any backup can be used. If otherwise (if no backup), recovery depends on the extent of damage to FAT and Root Folder. Damage to FAT has no impact on data recovery if the disk involved was recently defragmented.Defragmentation is not a requirement when you want to recover files from a floppy disk that was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it.
How and When 100% data recovery is possible
- If File Allocation Tables have been erased by virus or accidental reformat, user can make program ignore FAT copies and work without using them by specifying the superpower - I switch if the HDD / Floppy involved was recently defragmented. Recent defragmentation raises data recovery to about 100%. Defragmentation is not a requirement when you want to recover files from a floppy disk that was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it.
How and When 100% data recovery is possible
- RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 exposes bad disks, makes recovering files easy like never before. 100% recovery is assured even when both copies of FAT got completely damaged, if you defragment your disk regularly, or your floppy disk was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it. RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 can work with folder supplied as file on commandline; this feature makes it the only program of its kind in world.
- The most powerful Data Recovery utility the 16-bit and 12-bit File Allocation Table world has ever seen because RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 aims at recovering files from disk with physically damaged FAT and / or Root Folder, a scenario where backup and restore programs fail. (If the whole of Root Folder is damaged / erased, a backup of it made when it was ok must be available).
- Only program in the 16-bit and 12-bit File Allocation Table world that lets you work with a file system outside (which is otherwise the backed-up Root Folder and Subfolders on the emergency floppy) if the file system on the affected HDD or floppy denies access to files. One can use this not-on-the-affected-disk file system and recover files on the affected disk (using or without using original FAT copies on affected disk).
- No safeguards need to have been provided previously
- for recovering files from Floppy Disks of type 360 KB, 720 KB, 1.2 MB, 1.44 MB with damaged (i.e. bad) Boot sector. Just a Switch (command line Option) makes them work like good ones. The file system on the floppy disk need not be one that was defragmented recently. Only when File Allocation Tables have been erased / damaged partly or completely, a recent defragmentation of the file system is put forth as a requirement for achieving 100% data recovery. Defragmentation is not a requirement when you want to recover files from a floppy disk that was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it.
How and When 100% data recovery is possible
- for recovering files (with their directory entries) trapped in good sectors located after bad sector(s) in the directory structure, even if the bad sector is right at the top of the directory structure.
- If safeguards like backing up of the Root Folder (Root Directory) and regular defragmentation of disk have been provided,
- Helps recover files from accidentally reformatted HDD / Floppy if
Root Folder (Root Directory) is available in the form of a file. (Reformat must not have been made using switch /U of FORMAT.COM or in a similar manner by using some other format utility that erases all data on disk). Program also helps in backing up Root Folder or any specified folder/folders.
- Helps recover files from HDD / Floppy on which Deltree was run if user can edit and change, in the file that contains the folder (directory) obtained from disk, the deleted entry marker (E5) at start of filename to the filename's first character. This is the only feature that requires a hex editor.
- Helps recover 100% of files from HDD / Floppy with damaged Root Folder (Root Directory) or Subfolder (Subdirectory) if the Root Folder or Subfolder has been backed up and is available in the form of a file. Program also helps in backing up any folder (directory) structure whether Root or otherwise. Raw folder (directory) structure extracted from any backup can also be used to recover files by supplying it on command line as a file.
How and When 100% data recovery is possible
- Helps recover files from HDD / Floppy with completely erased or damaged File Allocation Tables. Just a Switch does the trick.
- Insists on just these 2 safeguards for ensuring reliability and availability of files in future,
- defragmenting and
- backing up of Root Folder (Root Directory)
But,
- only when File Allocation Tables have been erased / damaged partly or completely, a recent defragmentation of the file system is put forth as a requirement particularly for achieving 100% data recovery. If File Allocation Tables are OK (have no bad sectors), the drive / disk involved need not have been defragmented. Defragmentation is not a requirement when you want to recover files from a floppy disk that was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it.
- And only when Root Folder (Root Directory) has been erased / damaged partly or completely, a recent backup of it is put forth as a requirement for achieving 100% data recovery. If the Root Folder has only a few bad sectors, a backup of the Root Folder is not required.
RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 can backup specified folder (directory). A backed-up Root Folder (Root Directory) can be used (say, after a reformat) to access any subfolder (subdirectory) on the disk drive by working from folder to folder.
The backed-up directory structure is in the form of a file and is thoroughly searchable by RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 for selective file / subdirectory recovery, etc. The search specification can be long file names and can include wild cards even on long file names.
- Displays
- file / folder (directory) fragmentation status
- starting sector of file / folder (directory)
- unreadable sectors in FAT copies / Root Folder (Root Directory), and more
- One type of Report file produced lists extraordinary level of file / folder (directory) location details for each fragmentation even for hidden / system files / folders (directories).
- Even if FAT has errors, full recovery of files in specified subfolder (subdirectory) is ensured in case of regularly defragmented HDD / Floppy. Defragmentation is not a requirement when you want to recover files from a floppy disk that was quick formatted / reformatted before files were saved to it or was a brand new one when files were saved to it.
- Works at folder (directory) level. Can be made to recover a set of files by giving file specification.
- Program can be made to look for files and folders (directories) in the file passed to it rather than in the folder (directory) on disk that was physically damaged.
- Root Folder (Root Directory) and Subfolder (Subdirectory) can be backed up and supplied to program on command line later to recover files in them. Subfolders (Subdirectories) are also recovered which can be passed again to program to recover files / lower level subfolders in them.
- Recovers subfolders (subdirectories) in specified parent folder and saves them as files in their own names. These can be passed to RECOVER FIXED/FLOPPY DISK v2.2 later to recover files in them.
- Can be made to work on only folders (directories) or on only files or on both.
- Custom INT 24h handler pops up to disclose if it was Folder (Directory) read error.
- For 16-bit and 12-bit File Allocation Table (FAT) File Systems in DOS 3.1 to DOS 7.x, WINDOWS 3.xx, WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS 95-OSR2, WINDOWS 98 and WINDOWS 98SE.
- Program can handle up to one thousand (1000) fragments for a file.
- User can make program use either FAT copy 1 or FAT copy 2 or use one FAT copy as primary and the other as supplementary (to fill up bad sectors in the primary FAT copy).
- Has special switch for recovering only files with damaged FAT entry chain. (FAT entry chain for a file gets broken/damaged when a FAT sector having entries for the file's content gets damaged).
- Has Long File Name support. Recovered files and folders are saved in their original Long File Name (LFN) format names.
- Run-time Destination Folder Creation feature helps in creating new destination folder / folders as required simply by stating it/them on command line to send recovered files / folders to that destination. Long Folder names can be specified and a Long Folder name can have space characters in it.
- A raw representation of ROOT Folder / Subfolder extracted from
any backup can be used as starting point for recovering files in that path.
- When a backed-up directory structure (for ROOT Folder / Subfolder) is used to recover files, you doesn't have to remember any directory path so as to reach any folder and recover files in it. As subfolders are saved in
their original names when they are recovered, you can easily identify any
subfolder very important to you and use it to recover your precious files.
- Useable even on FAT damaged disks which were never defragmented or defragmented long back. But recovery depends on how much of file contents can be found in contiguous sectors.
- User can provide adequate disk space for recovered files by installing a second Hard Drive as master / slave drive on the affected computer to recover files from the reformatted Hard Disk. It is recommended that the machine be booted into WINDOWS through the second Hard Drive so that Long File Name services would be available so that recovered files and folders can be saved in their original long filenames.
- Makes you a data recovery expert sooner than you think about it. Any one can practice using this program even on good disks and become an expert in no time.
- If you suspect that a virus might one day erase all the File Allocation Tables on all disk partitions (on all installed HDD's), including the ones where backups created by the best of backup programs are kept, and want to be capable of managing that situation, RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 is the data recovery utility for you.
- A must-have utility to have a place on your Rescue Disk or Emergency Disk.
- Total size of HDD can be 10 GB, 20 GB or more on WINDOWS 95/98/98SE systems but size of disk partition must be less than or equal to 2 GB (i.e. 2047 MB). Maximum partition size is always 2GB up to WINDOWS 95 and on WINDOWS 98/98SE maximum partition size is 2GB if file system is FAT16.
- Even if you have only FAT32 partitions on your HDD, you can very well run RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 on your floppy disks including floppy disks with bad Boot sector.
- To recover files from a damaged floppy disk, when the files were saved to the floppy disk while working on a WINDOWS ME, WINDOWS 2000, or WINDOWS XP system, all you have to do is find a WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS 98/98SE system and run RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 on it to recover files from that floppy because there is nothing like a FAT32 floppy disk or a floppy disk with a FAT32 file system.
- Absolutely safe to use. No harm can be done to the file system by using the program by itself.
- Not for Hard Disk Drives with bad Boot sector (not a feature!).
- Will not run on FAT32 file systems (does not include floppy disks) [not a feature!].

RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v1.2a - FREEWARE earned 4-star rating from Yippee.net with its documentation receiving 5-star rating

Yippee.net's review for v1.2a is as follows:
Useful program for the IT heads out there or maybe even the home techie who like to get down and dirty recovering files using the File Allocation Table. Running in DOS and requiring a rather long list of switches, Recover Fixed/Floppy Disk is not for the inexperienced or faint of heart, but included is a comprehensive help file. Overall, a useful progie for manually recovering lost files.
Difference between v2.2 and v1.4 of RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk:
Sl No |
RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2 |
RECOVER Fixed/Floppy Disk V1.4 |
1 |
Can recover files from accidentally reformatted disk if Root Folder (Root Directory) or any subfolder (subdirectory) has been backed up and is available as a file. A Root Folder extracted from any backup in its raw format can be used to recover files. |
Cannot recover files after accidental reformat. |
2 |
If free disk space is available, user can use version 2.2 to train himself on recovering files by creating a new disk partition and copying files to it and then deliberately reformatting it after backing up the Root Folder (Root Directory), without waiting for an accidental reformat to occur. This way one can also figure out how to keep files and folders (directories) in order. If free space on HDD is not available, a floppy will suffice. Get a scratch floppy disk, copy some files to it, backup Root Folder, deliberately reformat the disk and recover files starting with the Root Folder by using its backup and the experience you get is priceless. |
No such self training is possible as version 1.4 cannot recover files from reformatted disk. |
3 |
FAT can be ignored by specifying switch -I. This switch is an absolute necessity when FAT copies had been erased (for example, in an accidental reformat) or had become corrupt completely. |
FAT cannot be ignored by specifying a switch. |
4 |
Root Folder (Root Directory) or subfolder (subdirectory) can be recovered / backed up as a file. Program can recover Root Folder (Root Directory) and save it to a file with a default name (when a command line switch is specified) even if FAT has been rendered useless. |
Only subfolder (subdirectory) can be recovered / backed up as a file. |
5 |
Subfolder (Subdirectory) can be recovered as a file without using information in File Allocation Table (for example, when some FAT sectors were physically damaged). |
Subfolder (Subdirectory) cannot be backed up as a file without using information in File Allocation Table. |
6 |
Root Folder (Root Directory) or subfolder (subdirectory) that is recovered / backed up as a file has a header. Any folder (directory) finder can find the contents of this file and interpret it as a folder (directory) despite the header at the top when this file cannot be accessed in the normal way as when this file gets locked up in the reformatted disk. |
Subfolder (Subdirectory) that is recovered / backed up as a file has no header. But it can be found by any folder (directory) finder. |
7 |
Boot sector can be supplied by specifying a switch for boot sector damaged floppies of type 360 KB, 720 KB, 1.2 MB and 1.44 MB. The floppy need not have been defragmented unless FAT too got damaged. |
Boot sector cannot be supplied to recover files from a boot sector damaged floppy. |
8 |
FAT usage can be optimized by specifying a supplementary FAT copy for use if primary FAT copy has bad sectors. That is, both FAT copies can be used by program in an optimized way when both FAT switches are specified on command line. Of the two FAT copies present in a FAT file system, any one FAT copy can be used as primary FAT copy and the other one as supplementary FAT copy through command line switches. These switches are useful when both FAT copies have a few bad sectors and if supplementary FAT copy can supply data for damaged FAT sectors in the primary FAT copy. (The OS always considers a FAT copy as that and not as primary or supplementary). |
Only one FAT copy can be used at any time for recovering files / folders. |
9 |
Two types of report files are generated. A Facts Report file when switch -O is specified (without switch -R or -X accompanying) and a Recovery Report file when switch -R or -X is specified. |
Only one type of report file is generated. Unlike it is in the commercial version the report file obtained by specifying switch -O (without switch -R or -X accompanying) will not contain extraordinary file / folder location details. |
10 |
A new report file which is highly recommended to be obtained before any disk errors occur is named like RFD_?.RPT (? = A or B or C and so on) which is the Facts Report file and is extremely useful as it contains extraordinary details of location of file / folder content (including for fragmented files / folders). |
The report file is always named RECOVRFD.RPT and it never contains location details for all fragmented (file / folder) content. |
11 |
If Long File Name support is available, Long File Name format is used when recovering and saving files with long filenames. |
Short File Name format is used when recovering and saving files even when Long File Name support is available. User has to rename files to LFN. |
12 |
A Folders (Directories) only listing can be generated using switch -DO. And all lower level subfolders (subdirectories) in any specified parent folder can be recovered / backed up in a single run of program. |
Switch -DO is not available. |
13 |
Even folders (directories) with damaged FAT entry chain can be recovered if their contents are contiguous. |
Folders (Directories) with damaged FAT entry chain are not recovered even if their contents are located in contiguous disk sectors. |
14 |
An excellent program with anti-sabotage techniques. Must-have utility for environments where chances of disk reformat is very high. |
Such techniques are restricted to subfolders only. They are not extended to Root Folder and File Allocation Tables. |
|
