2009 Garden Use Agreement

1.  New Garden Plots for 2009:  We have added 28 new 20ft x 25ft, (½ sized), plots to our garden for the 2009 garden season.  We have 254 existing 20ft x 45ft, (regular size), plots and 13 existing 20ft x 25ft plots.  All of these plots are cultivated by Wascana Center Authority, (WCA), in the fall.  Any other cultivation is done by each plot renter.  Addition of compost, peat or top soil is up to each plot renter.

2. The Annual Garden Fee Change:  The 2009 garden fees will be $45.00 for a 20ft x 45ft plot, (regular size), and $30.00 for a 20ft x 25ft, (1/2 size).

Cheques are to be made payable to South Zone Community Gardens and mailed to South Leisure Centre, 170 Sunset Drive, Box 1790 Regina, SK, S4S 3C8. Each gardener is required to be current with their respective Community Association by paying the yearly membership fees to their community organization.  We will not collect community membership fees.

3. Existing Gardeners:  Any existing gardener, who maintains their garden in good condition, may retain the same plot year after year. Existing gardeners will receive notice for the 2009 garden plot renewals in late February or early March.  The notice will arrive via e-mail or Canada Post.  Plot number on e-mails will be found behind your name in the e-mail header. For those receiving notification by mail, the plot number will be behind your name on the envelope. If you are not receiving notification by e-mail and do have an e-mail address, please forward it to the Garden Registrar with your payment.  Gardeners must pay the yearly rental by March 31st or their garden will be made available to other tenants. This due date is critical in order that new plot transfers & allocation can proceed. Please indicate your garden plot # on your cheque.

4. New Gardeners:   New gardeners can Phone the 565-1312 (Garden Phone), e-mail to szcomgardens@yahoo.ca, or mail your request along with a cheque to the address listed in item 2 above.  You can also visit our web site at www.oocities.org/szcomgardens/szcomgardens.html.

5. Plot Transfers & Allocation:  After March 31st, the registrar will allocate available gardens plots on the following basis:

a.       When an existing gardener in good standing, discontinues gardening, they can designate who will take over their garden plot.

b.       To  existing gardeners requesting a transfer

c.        To new gardeners who have applied for a garden plot.  This is on a first come first serve basis.

6. Disclosure:  Gardeners shall use and occupy the garden plot at their own risk and shall hold harmless the South Zone Community Gardens, Wascana Centre Authority or South Zone Recreation Board responsible for loss or damage of crops, equipment, or personal property due to weather, weeds, rodents, or robbery of vegetation.  The renter of the plot is responsible for the whole plot.

7. Garbage:  Garbage, weeds, weed/dirt clumps, garden tools, boards, or garden hoses should not be left in the walkways.  These items represent a danger to the volunteers mowing and to other gardeners.  See item 9 for hose information.  Weeds are to be removed from the garden area and placed in the refuse bins, not beside them or in the walk-ways.

8. Poor Gardening Practices:  Poor gardening practices, including unreasonable weed growth, will result in a warning and signs placed from a director.  Gardeners will be given a reasonable amount of time (1 week) to clear their garden weeds once they have been cited. All weeds are to be removed from the garden area and placed in the garbage bin not in the walkways.  Failure to comply with the warning could result in the immediate cancellation of the rental agreement with no refund.  The garden will be tilled under to prevent the spread of weeds.  Gardeners who abandon plots will not be allowed to rent a garden plot again.

9. Water:  Water will be turned on by May 15 (weather permitting) and turned off around October 1.  Annual water consumption constitutes the largest single cost for the gardens.  Do water whenever your garden needs it.  Please observe the following rules:

a.       Do not leave hoses unattended when watering;

b.       Do not water overlap your neighbour’s garden;

c.        Coil the hose at the water tap without tangling it on itself or with other hoses.

10. Compost:  Gardeners are to place all non-diseased and non-weed infested, organic material from their garden to the designated composting areas located around the Community Gardens.  DO NOT leave, boards, tins, plastic, or any other inorganic matter with the organic matter. Use the refuse bin for this inorganic material.  When mixed in, inorganic matter must be separated by Wascana Centre staff, at a high cost to the Community Gardens.

11. Year End:  The garden year-end is Thanksgiving Monday.  At year-end, take your organic waste to the designated compost areas.  Do not leave corn stalks or other similar matter on your garden.  Gardeners who fail to clean plots by Thanksgiving Monday will be charged a $40.00 cleanup cost, which must be paid prior to being allotted a plot in the ensuing year.
