Fatal accident on N.C. 87 South

SANFORD - Traffic was almost at a standstill Monday evening on N.C. 87 South after a reported head-on collision near J-Mart.

The collision apparently involved two cars and, according to scanner reports, at least one possible fatality. Shortly after 9 p.m., rescue workers held tarps around a car facing south in the roadway as members of the Lee County Rescue Squad cut a victim out of the vehicle.

Several yards north, an empty sports utility vehicle also rested in the roadway, facing north.

None of the names of those involved in the wreck were available Monday night. The accident is being handled by the Highway Patrol.
