Simon Moore

Simon Moore

I wrote a letter to Simon Moore, writer of The 10th Kingdom, on March 23, 2002. I recieved a reply from him on April 12, 2002. Here's what he had to say:

Dear Mary Elizabeth,

Thanks for writing. Your letter really made my day. It's great that 10k is still giving people pleasure after all this time.

To answer your questions-

I have always wanted to write. When I was at school I didn't do very well in exams and people were always telling me I had a 'vivid imagination' - meaning I should concentrate on the real world more! I sometimes want to go back to those teachers now and say - 'hey, look where my vivid imagination got me!' Anyway, I've always liked fantasy and SF and stuff, but most television is cops and hospitals, so it's very hard to get something like 10k made. As you probably know, it was over twelve years from when I first wrote 10k to finally getting it made. I don't really know where ideas come from. I think of things all the time, but I lose intrest in most of them a few days later. Some ideas won't go away, and one of them was what happened after 'Happy Ever After'? Which was one of the starting points for 10k. For me the most important element in fantasy is reality, and I wanted to see what would happen when a young woman from our world became involved in her own fairy story.

I wish the series had been more successful on its first showing, as I'm sure we'd be halfway through series 3 by now! There are, sadly, no immediate plans to do a sequel, but I keep telling people to have faith, as the fans loyalty to the series does have an effect on those in power, and I really want to continue the story I started. One day it will be the right time to do some more. All I can say about the sequel is it begins in a restaurant in New York, run by Wolf and Virginia, and they have a little cub!

Best wishes,
