TAD/HAD: September 2003

"This is something we've wanted to do for a long time," Zac said. "This is the way we write our music, just a guitar and a piano. Simple. It's getting back to the core of the band, and it's going to be tons of fun."

~Denver Post, August 22, 2003

Tuesday, September 2, 2003

The music has grown into rawer guitar work and a rootsy feel. Some older listeners may hold a grudge against Hanson for giving the world "MMMBop" and unwittingly igniting the teen-pop craze. But unlike 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears - the manufactured teen stars that followed in Hanson's wake and pretty much overwhelmed them - the brothers wrote and played their own material.

"There are always better versions and worse versions and different versions of things," he said. "Maybe you get put in with some artists that you don't necessarily agree with, but it's something you deal with, I guess. I've been lucky enough to be successful. People actually know who we are, and I get to share my music with people."

We lived a dream by a cool mountain stream in Nevada Millions of stars were exclusively ours that night. You were a part of my heart in the heart of Nevada

There on a hilltop with nothing but heaven around us We lost ourselves in a heavenly moonbeam till sunrise found us. We fell in love oh so madly in love in Nevada We lived a dream by a cool mountain stream that night.

Let's keep it moving, no time to waste Before you know it you've been replaced Find a foothold, grab a line Stay in motion or be erased

Where are we going at such a rate? You may question this frantic pace Well many others take this road Searching for this place

Although the course may change sometimes as directions evolve We all must find a way to reach our destination within

Mark: I know you guys wanna move along with your music evolution, but you gotta say "MMMBop" is this GREAT song!

Taylor & Ike: Oh dude yeah!

Taylor: I'm totally proud of it to say the least.

Brian: Oh good, great.

Taylor: That's what everybody says, "Are you sick of this, are you sick of that?" I don't sit there and listen to it all day, but I'm not sick of it. I'm really proud of everything we have released.

Taylor: And uh, so, I've gotta use the restrooms. But there's an upper level where we are and all the bathrooms are downstairs. And all the security guards are down there. So there we are... I'm trapped. So all there is, is a window that goes out to the roof.

Chunga and Mr. West: Ohhhhhhh no. *laughing*

Taylor: So there you go. I climb up to the roof and I find a corner... so you know, that's where I go.

Chunga: You peed on the roof?!

Mr. West: You peed on the roof at Sundance?!

Taylor: Well, yeah!

~Phone interview for KENZ 107.5 The End, Salt Lake City, February 2001

Sunday, September 14, 2003

Ike: Some songs can evolve in a dramatic way in the studio. Some songs change entirely. And some remain unchanged. For instance, I can think of a good example. The song, "Hand In Hand" on the last record. That song really just came alive in the studio. We really felt good about the song. Really liked the whole vibe of the song. But couldn't quite find a nitch for it and didn't know quite how to do it. And by some fluke...

Taylor: ...I pressed a wrong button on the keyboard and we began to jam on it and we ended up finding the song on it.

Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Dallas is a jewel Yeah, Dallas is a beautiful sight Dallas is a jungle But Dallas gives a beautiful light Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?

~Dallas, 10,000 Maniacs

Ahhhh - the BIG D. The biggest town in the biggest state, where everything is SO BIG. Including the airport, where people have to rent a car to get to their gate. I am sure that the biggest Hanson fan lives there too. :cP

Seriously, we wish the best time to the Dallass crowd!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2003

Zac: Well, first of all, I don't think any of us can play baseball.

Taylor: We suck at baseball. We really can't play.

Ike: Oh man, it's sad. Actually, I think Zac in horror remembers a particular time when he threw the first ball. (laughs)

Zac: I. you know. I can never throw it right, you know?

Taylor: Which is why we gave him stick.

Zac: They're like, "GO HOME! THIRD BASE!"

~KLOS Radio Interview, December 2001

Hello darling. Surprised? Yes, it's me again. I have just returned from the island of chandelier. What am I doing in town? Well, I'm glad you asked. I'm just passing through in search of the ever elusive thunderbird.

There's a moon over Bourbon Street tonight I see faces as they pass beneath the pale lamplight I've no choice but to follow that call The bright lights, the people, and the moon and all I pray everyday to be strong For I know what I do must be wrong Oh you'll never see my shade or hear the sound of my feet While there's a moon over Bourbon Street

~Moon Over Bourbon Street, Sting

All attending the concert at the House of Blues, New Orleans, have a blast!

Saturday, September 20, 2003

Taylor: But I tell you what. For all those fans that jump on stage and Zac has always said, "When a fan jumps on stage, I've got a drum set in front of me and I've got sticks" as weapons, which of course is very wonderful to hear. But for all of you guys, you're safe because Zac cannot aim. So, as long as you come straight at him, he won't hit you.

We decided to stray a little bit from our regular Hanson picture/Hanson quote routine and try something new :c)

In the next few days we will post a photo of Hanson from a 1997 show and you can test your Hanson expertise.

This was the biggest fizzer of all the Hanson shows I have ever seen. It was advertised weeks in advance. Consisted of 2 minutes of Hanson and 28 minutes of commercials and announcements such as: "Stay tuned for more Hanson!!!"

(Look for the answer in tomorrow's Tay_a_Day!)

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

That was a rather new concept: Hanson poking fun of themselves. We realised that Taylor can't act to save himself. Ike and Zac did a decent job. No wonder that Ike he was the one that got an acting role on "Sabrina" a few years later.

The answer for September 21: TGIF

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2003

Boy! That was an awesome show, Hanson presenting all the nominees for the US MTV Awards, them included. Taylor wore really strange shoes. And Zac wrecked the award. Not to mention the "pinch".

The answer for September 22: Saturday Night Live

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

Probably the most anticipated Hanson show of 1997.

Hanson and Dick Clark. The family thing. Made in the style of the American Bandstand. Fabulous live music and skits.

Many adults became fans after that show - simply because that was the first time that they IKEtually sat down and watched and listened to Hanson. Up until then - they were the "kiddie" band their daughters were crazy about.

Answer for September 23: MTV's The Nominees Are...

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

This was recorded before Hanson made it big. Taylor could barely talk - his voice was so broken ("I play key-squeak-board") - which didn't affect his singing at all. The acoustic rendition of MMMBop is one of the best ever for me.

Even more famous for the lady host accosting Zac at the end of the performance, to give him a kiss and a hug so hard that she knocked him over on the ground. Or was it Zac doing his best to escape?

Taylor and Ike were green with envy. Ike even mentioned that on another show the next year.

Answer for September 24: ABC Special, Meet Hanson

Friday, September 26, 2003

To their greatest dismay they were called cutie-pattooties. They snubbed the comparison with the Partridge family (good on ya, Hanson!)

Zac had his leg over the armrest during the interview and Taylor wasn't sure if they were going to tour, "We have to see how the record goes!"

Little you knew then, Taylor! :c)

Answer from September 25: MTV, Jenny McCarthy Show

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

The first of the six appearances on that particular show and the most famous stupid question, "How did you guys meet?" The highlight was Zac's half-braided hair. I read somewhere that they ran out of time. We learned that Hanson were not planning to eat sushi during the forthcoming visit to Japan even if they caused an international incident.

Answer for September 26: Rosie O'Donnel Show

Sunday, September 28th, 2003

Hanson had five appearances on this particular show. This was the first one.

This was the first time I heard Hanson singing live and got the shock of my life, "Where did Taylor's boy soprano go?"

After the performance the host went to shake hands, asking everyone, even the backup band members, "Are you a Hanson?" to which Ravi, their backup guitar player at the time answered, "Naaaah."

Answer for September 27: Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Monday, September 29th, 2003

A gem of a show. We learned how to make "Tommy Picklewhich" (mustard, chips, pickles and mayo). We learned how to make cakes from honey, chocolate chips, cereal and peanut butter, which they IKEtually cooked in the oven. Taylor's expression is priceless, "Mine looks like. never mind". There was a food sculpture in the shape of Zac's head, which got hurled across the room. We learned about DA CRUNCH (lucky charms, marsh mellows and orange soda), which turned into DA SOG. The highlight for me was Taylor tasting the "dessert" he made. It was a hamburger made of marsh mellow goo, caramel syrup, lucky charms cereal and KETCHUP. At the end of the show - the kitchen looked like mine looks now.

Answer for September 28th: The Late Show with David Letterman

Tuesday, September 30th

A set of shock waves swept the Hanson fan community: Ike was in SHORTS.

When they nailed the perfect acapella choruses of "Where's The Love" and MMMBop, the host exclaimed, "Boyz II Men is in trou-ble!!!"

We learned their grades - 6, 9 and 11 respectively.

Zac and to some extent Taylor, were glued to the two TV's in the room - playing Playstation games.

Answer for September 29th: Snick, Cooking with Hanson
