On the 17th November 1920, Doug married Louisa June Taggett from Yelgun (near Mullumbimby) he was 26 and she was 19. Louisa was an avid reader and played the piano. It is thought that they met at one of the local dances when Louisa was playing. They farmed at Wardell via Ballina specializing in pineapples, passion fruit and bananas. Together they had 6 children Alex, Joan, Nola, Ken, Barry and Shirley.
