SONGKRAN FESTIVAL

April 13 - 15

Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is an occasion for celebration throughout the country. This occasion is marked with religious ceremonies as well as public festivals. Water throwing among the people in a spirit of fun and goodwill is the main activity of this festival. This festival is held throughout Thailand, but if you want to really enjoy this festival to its fullest, you should come to Chiang Mai where there is variety of religious and fun-related activities conducted along with parades and a Miss Songkran beauty competition. For Chiang Mai, there are 3 important days in Songkran Festival. The first day is for water throwing the important Buddha Images in Chiang Mai. Every temple in Chiang Mai City will send its most important Buddha Image, such as Phra Buddha Singhing that is Wat Phra Singh’s the most important Buddha Image, to the parade for water throwing by people. The water throwing to Buddha Image is showing the respect to Buddha that normally can not do, especially for women.

In the second day, it’s the day for taking sand to the temple.

In the third day, it’s the day for visiting the old in the family.
