Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is an occasion for celebration
throughout the country. This occasion is marked with religious ceremonies
as well as public festivals. Water throwing among the people in a spirit
of fun and goodwill is the main activity of this festival. This festival
is held throughout Thailand, but if you want to really enjoy this festival
to its fullest, you should come to Chiang Mai where there is variety of
religious and fun-related activities conducted along with parades and a
Miss Songkran beauty competition. For Chiang Mai, there are 3 important
days in Songkran Festival. The first day is for water throwing the
important Buddha Images in Chiang Mai.
Every temple in
Chiang Mai City will send its most important Buddha Image, such as Phra
Buddha Singhing that is Wat Phra Singh’s the most important Buddha Image,
to the parade for water throwing by people. The water throwing to Buddha
Image is showing the respect to Buddha that normally can not do,
especially for women.
In the second day, it’s the day for taking sand to the temple.
In the
third day, it’s the day for visiting the old in the family.
