Introduction
It’s hard to introduce D.N.Angel without sounding confusing. It may be hard to explain, but it makes perfect sense when you read the manga or watch the anime for yourself. Speaking of the manga and the anime, they are very different. Those who have read the manga before watching the anime were disappointed by the number of filler episodes, and deviation from the plot. This is not to say that the anime is inferior to the manga. It is still charming in its own way.
Phantom Thief Dark Mousy has lay dormant for 50 years in the Niwa family’s D.N.A. Dark is only activated when a Niwa male, such as Daisuke, turns 14. At this magic (or not so magic) age, boys hit puberty, testosterone levels soar, and things such as love become significant. Risa, his love interest, decides that he would make a better friend than a boyfriend. As if our poor Daisuke hadn’t had enough, he has to come to a home full of traps everyday as part of his ‘training.’ After a horrible birthday at school, in less than an hour’s time, he transforms into Dark just from thinking about Risa, is told that he is actually a thief, and that he has a mission. Just to complicate things, Risa has a twin called Riku, a suspicious blue-haired boy called Satoshi commands a police squad and an evil, white version of Dark called Krad is after Daisuke. D.N.Angel is a unique series, with its own memorable moments. The characters are realistic and they are guaranteed to capture your heart. Plus, the art is stunning, done by the talented bunny-man, Yukiru Sugisaki.

Daisuke Niwa: Your average cute, clumsy anime boy. He’s the sweetest thing ever. (Why’d Risa refuse him?)
Dark Mousy: Drop-dead gorgeous thief with black wings who has an ego problem.

Satoshi Hiwatari/Hikari: the blue haired one with glasses, doesn’t talk much, observant and intelligent.

Satoshi: After a thorough investigation in our school, you seem to be the female with the most attractive appearance on the outside. Therefore, as a citizen I want you to please cooperate with me so I can study this for my investigation.
Risa: (thinking) As a citizen??
Who?
Name: Risa Harada
The Harada twin with long hair. She is naïve, and superficial in the beginning of the manga and in the anime, turning down Daisuke because he wasn't good enough for her. Her number one obsession is Dark ever since that day she saw him on national television.
Many people watch or read the beginning of D.N.Angel and classify Risa as a spoilt, immature brat. Daisuke's clearly the good guy in D.N.Angel and since Risa's hurt him, even unintentionally, she must be gotten rid of. Unfortunately, her mistake and her nasty reputation stays with her for the rest of the series and no matter what she does or feels, she will always be inferior to Riku. If you watch or read again with little to no regard for her immature actions in the beginning, you will see that she is also an endearing and memorable character. Although immature in the beginning, she has the potential to grow and in fact she does so in the short time span of less than a year. Both Dark and Riku have noticed this change. When thrown into a cell with Riku, she openly explained her own selfishness and inconsideration. She understood her weaknesses and allowed herself to change. In the Second Hand of Time episode, Riku threw hissy fits when she was sucked into the world that Daisuke had painted whereas Risa was calm and quiet. She even tended to Dark's wound, explaining that it wasn't because he was Dark, but she would do this for anyone.
She's stupid!
Never did she glomp him or call "Dark san!!!!" in the later episodes. Instead, she would appear to be deep in thought, probably examining herself and those around her. Risa may be slow, but she isn't ignorant. If she makes a mistake, she is able to learn from it. Like Satoshi, she is observant and thoughtful. Speaking of Satoshi, she was not only able to recognize him who was cross-dressing (whereas Daisuke had no clue, and was even surprised to find out), she also realized his true intent for studying her looks. Not only that, but she also said something quite insightful, "Perhaps we share the fate of having a sad one-sided love with him." Now how could she have known that much about Satoshi? Nobody else in the school knew about Satoshi's relations with Dark. Along the way, Risa must have pieced together the puzzle from little clues she's picked up.
What about that time she misunderstood Daisuke's meaning of "I don't want to be your friend"?
Yes, she is slow. But didn't she eventually realize her mistake in the end? She called Daisuke to apologize, and I think we can forgive her for that. Risa, unlike Riku, is not stubborn. She is able to admit defeat. She is teachable. And she listens to other people's advice carefully. How many of us can say that? When Saehara told her what he felt about her cooking, she became defensive about it at first. After being forced to eat his cooking, she told him that it was really good. And inspired, she promised to improve.
You can't forget the fact that Risa "fell in love" with Dark on TV and then stalked him around town! How creepy. Then she competes in bust size with her sister. She must be a shallow person.
Perhaps. In the beginning of the show that is. But does her bust size, looks, or pretty dresses matter to her any more later on in the show? "Stalking Dark" may not be as creepy as you might think. (and besides, she stops.) Think of your favourite celebrity. Wouldn't you want to meet him? Now let's say he's known to be just walking around in your immediate area. I don't know about you, but I would go look for him. School crushes are almost always silly. Remember yours? Some guy in your geography class said "hi" to you and before you know it, you're head over heels in love. Do you even know the guy? But was it controllable? Not exactly. In addition, Risa's a bit deluded by her tarot card readings.
Dark is at fault too! He flirted with her, thus leading her on. In both the anime and the manga, he kissed her, (even though it's clear that he doesn't like her) much to Daisuke's horror. Risa is not a brat. She is brave, throwing herself in danger for the sake of those she care about. She is competitive with Riku, but that's just healthy sibling rivalry. In reality, she loves her sister, and can be self-sacrificing for her happiness. She willingly gave up her own stuffed animal so that Riku would calm down. In the end, Riku kept her teddy bear as a symbol of her sister's love. When Krad attacked Dark, Risa did not hesitate to run into the middle of the fight. Likewise, when Riku was hurt by Krad, she also ran to her aid.
There are many good qualities in Risa. Why would Daisuke have liked her in the first place? I hope you have a better understanding of this underappreciated character.
Who?
Name: Satoshi Hiwatari
Hiwatari is his adopted last name, since his entire blood family is dead. His real name is actually Hikari, meaning "ice hunter", something you might associated with his cool, blue eyes. His adopted father rarely speaks to him, but makes showy displays of false affection in public. At school, he is revered by everyone (especially the girls, except for Risa), but keeps his distance so that Krad, his sadistic, possessive, and self-absorbed alter ego can't come out and kill those he care about. (More on Krad later)
Okay, I’ll admit it. I liked him because he grew increasingly good looking as the series went on, which isn’t exactly a very good reason to like someone. And I say “as the series went on” because in the beginning, I thought he was just creepy. He’s one of those people who look better and better the more you know them. And he looks a bit like Trunks from Dragonball Z, whom I had an unhealthy infatuation with for the longest time (but that was a loonng time ago. *ahem*). He’s even better in the manga. And, if you add a pair of wings, and subtract the glasses (which I personally don’t really mind, but some of my friends think are nerdy. I’ll have to educate them. ), you get Bishonen, with a capital B. And that’s almost too much for us squeaky fangirls to handle. Second reason: he’s a certified genius, having graduated from University top of his class at the age of 14. I was particularly impressed with his observation skills, and quick logical reasoning. He can tell what’s fake, and what’s not just by looking at it. After his CPR encounter with the fake, drowning Daisuke who was actually With, he could already tell the difference between them in the moonlight mask chapter. Another added plus: he’s Supreme Commander, with good reason. Not only is he intelligent, he is also physically adept. Dark has got wings, enabling him to fly with agility, while Satoshi doesn’t. Yet, on numerous occasions, he was able to catch him, handcuff him or put him behind bars. Again, this just proves how smart he is. Dark’s been around for a long time (which means he should have more experience), but Satoshi still manages to outsmart him. Third reason: Think of your fav bishonen. Now think of him in drag. Ew. That’s right! But Satoshi cross-dressed and looked good.
Spoiler Alert! Spoiler galore in this section! I've separated the "encounters" into manga and anime, so that you can choose the one that you've seen before. Any links to pictures here don't open in a new window, so you do that yourself!
Well, why not?
What about Daisuke and Satoshi? And Satoshi's gay.
It seems as though most Satoshi fans prefer the Dai/Sat pairing. But it's clear that Daisuke isn't attracted to Satoshi romantically. We know that Daisuke isn't gay. Yes, he's crossed dressed for a school play, but it's pretty clear that he likes girls. Daisuke's taken by Riku, and from what the show's depicted, it's not likely that they'll break up any time soon.
In addition, we don't know if Satoshi's is gay for certain. It may seem like it because he's always calling for Daisuke, saving him from danger, and pinning him up against walls. Well, Satoshi's peculiar and he does say wierd things. We can't immediately assume that his actions have other "implications". Daisuke's always calling Satoshi's name too, just like he would for any friend.
But Krad said that Satoshi treasures Daisuke!
Because Daisuke is the first person who understands his predicament and cares about his well being, Satoshi cannot help but treasure him...as a friend. Who else can he treasure? Krad? His step father? His classmates who never talk to him? I would say that Risa comes closest to Daisuke in understanding and caring for Satoshi.
What about Krad x Satoshi?
How does that work? Physically, it does not even make sense. Krad lives in Satoshi's body! Yeah, he comes out in some wierd ghostly form now and then, but that doesn't count. Krad's feelings for Satoshi is what I call suffocating and possessive. Not love! He tortures Satoshi from within, taunts him on a regular basis, and inflicts physical pain on him by sprouting wings. He has no ounce for respect for his host, coming out whenever he could or feels like it.. Krad is selfish and sadistic! "I'm not you!" Satoshi said many times. Throughout the course of the show, Satoshi wants to love, but could not because of Krad's existence. He has no reason to love Krad. Ever read Krad x Sat fiction? Aside from it being totally gross, it's silly. For the author to pull it off, they both have to be OOC.
What about some random other girl? Why does it have to be Risa? Many girls admire him!
Do they know him? Do they know that he's got a psychotic alter ego lurking in his DNA? Have they ever talked to him or tried to understand about him? What they feel is something akin to Risa's 'love' for Dark. It's superficial, and is definately not root for a relationship. Satoshi needs someone who knows a bit about his past. Can you imagine him trying to explain Krad to someone? But Risa's seen it with her own eyes, is very involved with Dark, is observant and would likely understand him if he talked to her.
With other pairings out of the way, on to Reasons Why!

Okay, so it's not a strong reason, but as a general rule, anime pairings look good together. Risa finds Satoshi attractive. Satoshi finds Risa attractive. Both of them said/thought so in the manga,
It's implied in the structure of the show
Two bishonen with alter-egos, and a pair of twins. Daisuke gets Riku, and naturally, Satoshi gets Risa. In the ending of the anime, Daisuke and Riku are together, and who's left? Risa and Satoshi, stealing glances at each other. That's what I'd call foreshadowing.
Hints and Encounters in the anime
The Feather
In the episode where Krad and Dark fights in the presence of Risa and Riku, Dark saves Riku from a fatal blow by Krad. Krad is left alone with Risa. Risa did not run away, but tried to reach Hiwatari-kun through Krad by calling his name, in much the same way as Daisuke. (She's so brave!) Her calling him did in fact have an effect on Krad, as Satoshi was able to revert back. At the end of the episode, Risa finds herself on a bench, covered by Satoshi's jacket. A white feather flutters to the ground.. During the song "Caged Bird", she looks at it thoughtfully.
The Look
The furtive glance at each other at the end of the show... teehee! See pictures! And "the look" occured right after Daisuke said that there's probably somebody out there who is glad Satoshi is with them, and after Satoshi vowed to have fun in life. KYU!
Manga Encouters and Hints
Volume 2: The shhh
This part's so cute! Satoshi pulls out a cell phone to call for a search party, and then starts to walk off somewhere. Risa notices this, and asks him what he's planning on doing. "Shh..." he says, and trods off, leaving a bewildered Risa behind. "How rude!" she thinks to herself. Why would she get so mad and frustrated?
Volume 3: The Glasses
Satoshi had to cross dress for his ingenius plan of using women to capture Dark. In order to properly seduce Dark, he needed to discover the traits of a beautiful female, and so asked Risa out to study her looks. During their encounter, Risa wanted to see what he looked like without his glasses. He complied, and suddenly felt dizzy. Risa thought that it was because of the glasses. Satoshi had a bewildered look on his face, and said, "No, it's not what you think..." Why would he care about what she thinks? It's also interesting to note that after Risa hurried off in a rush, saying, "See you tomorrow!," he repeated her words to himself, seemingly surprised by them. I'm not sure to what this may mean, but it's peculiar. Why would anyone be surprised by such a common greeting? As well, Krad threatened to come out when he took off his glasses. I know it is an accessory, but perhaps after taking them off, he saw Risa in a new light, and felt some emotion, which triggered Krad.
Volume 3: The Well
So Satoshi proceeds with that grande plan of his', but ends up in his own trap with Risa. Risa wandered around the museum, looking for Dark, and steps into a hidden well. Satoshi sees her in the nick of time, and runs to try to save her, or at least break her fall, completely abandoning his mission to catch With. The scene cuts there. Later, the scene cuts back to them again, and Risa realizes that he is Satoshi when he covers her with his jacket. She also says, "Perhaps we share the same one-sided love with Dark." Hmm...
Volume 4: The famous ferry scene
Satoshi falls asleep on Risa! He wakes up, half-dead, and stares at her. She becomes embarrassed by all her cooing female classmates, and eventually leaves her seat.
Volume 5: The Hair
I love this part to pieces! Daisuke saves Risa who's been drowning, and leaves her on the shore. Satoshi tells him about Riku, and he runs off to find her. Risa finally awakens to Satoshi peering down on her, and she asks if it was he who had saved her. He hesitates before saying no. (I'm sure he wanted to say "yes"!) "Then...the one with black hair?" (Forget about stupid Dark, Risa!) "No...the hair was..." and Saehara pops out of nowhere, effectively ruining the tender moment!
Volume 8? :
Satoshi with wings catches Risa when she slipped off the side of a building while calling for Dark and Riku. Riku gets caught by Dark/Daisuke, and Risa gets caught by Satoshi. He must have been there watching her. Generally, you keep track of the person you like's whereabouts. "Personal experience?" you ask? Um... ~runs away~
