Princess Meems
Mimi has often been hailed as the 'princess' of the digidestined, primarily because of her attitude to living in the digital world. She hates it. She can't stand the lack of proper accommodation, the crude meals and the weeks and months she had to go for without a shower. She complains incessantly about how much better things were at home and how she misses the real world. She basically never shuts up. This all makes her a princess because she finds that the 'wilderness' aspects of the digital world don't match up to the high life she lived before. But personally, I think it just makes her a whiny brat. Mimi's a digidestined, for goodness' sake. She's supposed to be saving the world. But instead she's hanging around and whining. You've got to adjust, girl. Granted, she does some good things, but I don't really think there's a place for princesses in the digital world. It's a tough place to live sometimes and if you can't look after yourself then you become a burden on others - which I think Mimi is at times.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like Mimi a lot. I just don't think 'princess' is an accurate summary of her personality. She sort of grows out of the bratty attitude and learns to be much less selfish. She's a great mentor to Miyako in 02. But Mimi is a product of consumer society; she loves shopping and is a sucker for fashion. She is dependent on the gurus to tell her what to wear. She'd probably be the 'cheerleader' type in an American school, although in Australia she'd probably just be one more school girl, not one of the 'popular' kids (although she'd certainly try to be one). I guess this is all meaningless in Digimon, though.
So, where does this put her in the romance area? She definitely wouldn't mix well with someone too much like her; can you just see her and a future husband spending every dollar they earned on weekly wardrobe updates? Mimi sort of needs someone more responsible, like Jyou, who she is paired with a lot. He'd keep her from being too rash and he could tolerate her occasional whining. Koushiro is a less common, but equally feasible match. His intelligence counters her ditzy-ness, plus she can probably pull some emotion out of the guy. Miyako, too, is sometimes paired with Mimi (re: Family Picnic) although I'm not so keen on Yomi any more, for reasons that will remain unsaid. ¬.¬ Anyhoo, here's the deal on Mimi with my favourite trio:
Michi
I've never had any objections to Michi, although I don't think it's a terribly likely couple. There's very little evidence as far as I can see (no, the-jock-and-the-cheerleader doesn't count). At first I thought Taichi would get quite annoyed with Meems, but I suppose he might have a little more tolerance for her than I first thought. Michi is often seen as a background pairing in Sorato fics. A lot of Sorato fans seem to like this, although I'm not really sure why. Probably something to do with them being left over once you've got Matt 'n' Sora out of the way. On the whole, it looks good and sounds good, but I don't think it's very plausible.
Mimato
I
didn't mind Mimato at first. No, there wasn't any evidence. No,
their personalities didn't match at all. No, they never even looked at
each other. But I didn't mind it. I had no reason to hate the couple
at the time. Nope, they seemed okay to me, and for a long time I read
Mimato fanfiction with only a very limited amount of scepticism. I was
perfectly okay with it until I heard some people dissing the Mimato fans.
I hears the stories about stealing fanart (yeah, it was only one site who did
it, but it gives the others a bit of a bad name) and how they didn't tolerate
any other Mimi or Yamato couples. As a Sorato and Taito fan this bugged me
rather a lot, and I was even more annoyed when I visited some M&M
sites. Particularly one that mostly consisted of stuff like: 'SORATO
SUX HARDCORE!!!!!!! I HATE SORA SHE'S TAKING MATT AWAY FROM MIMI AND I
WANT HER TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11' which gets annoying after a
while. Plus it makes me seriously doubt the webmaster/mistress's
intelligence.
To summarise: Mimato has nothing going for it except for 'they look cute
together'. It's never going to happen. It's one of the most unlikely
couples in all of Digimon Adventure. And people might actually like it, if
it weren't for the general attitude of the fans.
Mira
Okay, I confess! I'm a long time fan of Mira. I don't know whether it's very likely (neither are Michi or Mimato) but Sora and Mimi are best friends, after all, and in anime close friendships have a tendency to become romances. Though I try to steer away from aesthetics, I reckon they look really cute together. Oh, remember that really sweet scene from the episode with Princess Mimi, where Sora's in her dream? C'mon, don't tell me that didn't mean something! Their personalities match. They're really close friends. And the rare Mira fanfics are a treat. Such little gems, some of them, although I often get the impression that some are little more than extended friendship fics. The one downside to Mira is that it's often 'packaged' with Taito and Jyoushiro into the one fic, which I don't like. But I like the idea of seeing these two together.
Just to finish off, I'd like to say that Mimi has virtually no chance of getting into a successful relationship with any of my favourite characters. Given the choice, though, I'd take Mira any day, with Michi a close second. Sorry, Mimato peeps, but it ain't gonna happen and some of you have insulted Sora too many times for me to ever forgive.
