Way too cool
This rant has no purpose except to describe one of the stranger traits of my own personality: I instinctively shy away from whatever characters/couples/other stuff are the most popular. This doesn't always necessarily apply to anime, but to just about everything in life. With digimon, however, I was tricked into going with the mainstream. It was the show that introduced me to the realm of anime and is my favourite anime yet. But before I found out about the myriad of sites and fans for digimon adventure, I'd formed my favourite couples and favourite characters. One of the characters, the third down on my list (Sora first, then Taichi) was the most popular of all: Yamato Ishida.
I quickly came to wish that I hadn't nominated him as a favourite. There seemed to be an awful lot of Yamato shrines, although since they were the first places that Kaz-chan introduced me to it's not that big a surprise. I soon became overly acquainted with the Lost Temple of Ishida and Project Ishida as well as a collection of smaller sites. Matt, who I had previously found interesting because of his unpredictable character, had been analysed, smacked around and drooled over to the point that I hardly recognised the guy, and didn't like the bits that I did.
The Taito depictions put me off too. I'd seen the signs in the anime and I respected the couple, thinking that it was rather romantic in a way. The couple that I had vaguely liked and respected was now little more than a dirty joke. Okay, so the joker liked it in a serious sense as well, but I found it difficult to continue regarding Taito as romantic when there are so many screenshots displayed with the dirty captions and general toilet humour. Jeez, you'd think their entire relationship (which never existed in canon, but oh well) was based purely on sex! What is it with these fangirls?
Drooling fangirls, that's another of my pet peeves. The constant obsessing over The Digi Bishounen (with capital letters) really, really put me off. Lessee, he has... eyes. Blue ones. And hair that is blonde. Big deal, so do I (sort of). Yamato's physical features were never of much interest to me. I suppose, in retrospect, one could see him as somewhat attractive, but he ain't real. Yeah, try telling this to a fangirl. I'd love a dollar for every time I've read 'He is sooooooo hot' or words to that effect. Also the level of Sora-bashing (and to a lesser extent, Jun-bashing) annoys me. No, wait, that's an understatement. It makes me so mad I want to completely ignore my stance on flaming and the expense of flights to america so that I can come over and SSSSTRANGLE whoever writes that sort of junk. You can read more on the pointlessness of Sora-bashing here.
And then there's Yamato himself. Once I'd seen a few of these sites I started to find his whole character really annoying. The snappishness, the brooding glares, the way he vehemently disagreed with Tai (because the fangirls had put me right off Matt/Tai bitchfights). I just wanted to tell the guy to get over himself!
But despite all this, Yamato is still my third favourite character and still comes after Sora and Tai. I still find him fascinating and unpredictable and I think that a lot of people, even fangirls, have a bit of trouble getting a handle on his character. Matt's a funny person (as in, humorous) but it's been a long time since I saw a fanfic in which he was capable of cracking a joke. Don't worry, it'ss better than what she'd do if she were here in person.
