celebrity in the city |
august 2001 |
I'm on my way to the subway after work, thinking about life, when I decide to go to Paris (the movie theater) to see if something good is showing. If it is and if it starts in no more than 15 minutes, I'll stay. I approach 58th Street and see a small crowd. Hmmmm, a huge line to get in. I get closer and see that the line is not a line. It's a bunch of people watching the celebrities that arrive to a movie premiere. Reporters and cameramen abound. |
One celebrity arrives. She looks like Cher. Then another. God knows who that is... We, a thousand tourists and I, are waiting for Nicole Kidman. |
There is George Whipple of NY1, the TV channel. |
And there is Nicole, talking to the reporters, very tall and pale... She arrived after a half hour we're standing there, with the police officers telling us to pull back to the sidewalk. The police officers are not very friendly... |
Now I'm here wondering if all we're gonna see is her back... The lady on my right side asks if I'll yell Nicole's name with her just so we can have her turn to our side of the sidewalk and get a good picture. I agree. I must say it: this was a good "crowd experience". The lady on my left side is a passerby, just like me. She had just come from the dentist. She asks where I come from. Very quickly I say I'm from Brazil, but that "I live here". |
Et la voila! (Needless to say that, when she finally turns to our side of the sidewalk, my hands aren't firm enough. After all, this is my first celebrity shot.) |
Note: I'm not exactly a Nicole Kidman fan, but I guess I'll go see the movie. |
Everybody is pretty friendly and this big, tall, black man asks me if I'm a movie star too (sic!), to which I reply: "I wish!". |
