十九世紀英國大文豪狄更斯在他最暢銷的兩本小說之一「雙城記」首章，以這段文字開場。百年餘後，再咀嚼這段對「時代」的極端描述，不得不問：是否真有所謂的「大時代」？過去？現在？未來？人類發展史中是否存在「本質上的進步」？
從存在主義的世界觀出發，本質
(Essenz)和存在(Existenz)的區別永遠存在。然而，單就「量的」進步而言，或可稱有所謂的「劃時代」。近半世紀來，生物科技的發展，以科學角度觀之，確有其可觀「量的」進步；從人文角度探討，我們不禁得問，生物科技是否為人類發展歷史帶來「質的」進步？本期「
