It was a night of evil The smart people were home already, either curled up by a fire with a good book or else enjoying the company of family. Many had already crawled under their blankets, sleeping off the weariness of the day.
But not everyone was smart. Some were taking advantage of the unusually quiet city. They did not see it as a night of evil, but of opportunity. This was the best chance to pull off one of the biggest heists ever attempted, when even the police crews would be reluctant to respond. At least, that was what Kylie thought.
In England, Kylie had been the greatest cat burglar London have ever been inflicted with. And she had only been fourteen at the time. But then her father got transferred Stateside and Kylie could no longer swipe things with ease. America was different. Everyone had alarms on their houses here. Kylie had to improve her techniques considerably. Now she was nearly thirty and still just a petty criminal. So when this opportunity presented itself, she knew she couldn't pass it up.
But things had not gone as smoothly as she had planned and now she was on the run. The police were responding to a different alarm in the same building. Not one she had set off, but one that had gone off five minutes before she arrived. The cops had been slow to respond, but not slow enough, since she had just been cutting through the glass when they arrived.
She was hiding in the park, while the troops pulled together some dogs to sniff her out. She cursed again and hoped she was downwind. With the way this wind was blowing, if she was upwind of them, they'd find her in minutes.
A lone paper slapped her in the face and she swore as she ripped it off. She'd have tore it up, she was in that bad of a mood, had she not seen the words typed in elegant font across the top of the paper. They caught her eye and she scanned the paper, intrigued by what it was offering. She'd never seen anything like this before and she wondered if it was a scam.
A howl behind her signified the start of the dog hunt for her, and she crumpled the ad and stuck it in her pocket. As the wind changed course, she followed it, knowing that keeping the wind at her back was her only hope of escape, and soon she found that she was home again, and the dogs were left far behind.
Once Kylie was safe in her house, she made herself a mug of hot cocoa and settled into a big navy blue armchair, pulling the crumpled ad out of her pocket and reading it again. She sat up long into the night looking at it and before drifting off into sleep, she made the decision to call the number in the morning.
