This anime revolves around the life of a young girl who just entered high-school. Utena Tenjo, , has a diluded childhood memory of when she was little and her parents had just died. She was crying, and was approached by a prince on a white horse. He gave her a ring with a rose signet on it and told her to never give up her ccourage and bravery, and that the ring would lead her back to him..... This was a good thing, Right? But, because of her admiration for the prince, she decided to become a prince as well, but was that really good for her?? She chose her high-school because it's symbol was the same rose signet on her ring. One day, she was talking with her friend Wakaba, , when they heard a commotion. They went to see what it was, and it was that someone's love-letter to another young man Sayonji, , was posted and some boys were reading it. When Utena went and ripped it down, telling the boys that gentilmen wouldn't do such a thing, Wakaba started crying. It was then that Utena found out it was Wakaba's letter. She told her not to worry, that Sayonji was mean and that she had seen him hurting another girl, Anshi, . But Wakaba wouldn't listen, so Utena went to challenge Sayonji in a duel with budo swords..... But Sayonji thoght she ment something else and told her to meet him at a part of the campus which was off limits. When she went there, the door were locked, but a drop of liquid hit her rose signet ring, and the doors magically opened. When she reached the top of the stair-case, she saw Anshi wearing a beautiful dress, and Anshi summoned a sword from within her, which was Sayonji's weapon. Magical sword against Budo sword, and by a miracle, Utena won.... As she left the arena, anshi awaited her outside. "I am the Rose Bride," she said, " and because you won the duel, I am you're flower, until you are defeated......"
