Painted by American artist, Fred Pansing (1844-1912), An Icy Tow illustrates that steam power was ultimatly going to replace sail. This painting was executed in about 1900, and, although some sailing ships continued up until WW2, steam power was already a work horse to be reckoned with. The scene is in the Narrows, a channel between Staten Island and Bay Ridge, the entrance to New York Bay and Harbor from the Atlantic.
