TOPIC: Introduction to the book Owls In the Family

Objectives: Through discussion and brainstorming of ideas, students will become familiar with several facts about owls and become familiar with the book, Owls In the Family, by Farley Mowat. 

Materials: Experience chart, markers, map of Canada, book Tillo, overheads and the book Owls In the Family.

ACTIVITY

Motivation Technique: Read the class a short story about an owl (Tillo) and discuss whether or not owls should live with people as pets.

Development: - After reading Tillo, hold up the book Owls in the Family and ask the student to look at the cover. From looking at the cover, ask the students to predict what they could be about .

  • After they have shared some of their predictions, tell them that book is about a boy who adopts two owls as his pets.
  • Explain a little about where the story takes place and how Saskatoon differs from a city like Montreal. Hand the students out a map of Canada, and by using the overhead, show them where Saskatoon is and have them identify it on their maps.
  • Talk about the author Farley Mowat and how this book is an autobiographical account of his childhood and how he is a Canadian author

  • Have students brainstorm what they already know about owls and write their ideas on the experience chart.

 
 
 
Follow-up/Reinforcement Activity: 
  • This brainstorming lesson will aid the children in writing stories and poems on owls later in the unit.
Closure:

- Ask students to say one thing that they learned about owls and ask the students what they want to learn about owls.
