Before the first Bodie Island light tower was put up in 1848, there was no light in the 80 miles between Cape Hatteras, NC and Cape Henry, VA, at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. The first light tower was a 54 foot brick structure. In 1859 the Light house Board constructed a second light, this one 80 feet tall with the brick tower built on a sturdy foundation of driven piles and stone. Two years later the Confederates set off explosives in the lighthouse, leaving it in ruins. | After the war the Lighthouse Board erected a third lighthouse at the site, 1 163-foot conical brick tower that began service on October 1, 1872. To make it a distinctive daymark, the tower was painted with side black and white horizontal bands. The light has been automated for several decades, and its first order lens is still in place. - Heritage Art Publishers, 1999 |
