Amphitrite
The wife of Poseidon, and a sea goddess in her own right. She is either the daughter of Oceanus
and Tethys or Nereus and Doris. She is the mother of Triton. When Poseidon wanted
Amphitrite for his bride, she refused and hid herself. Poseidon sent a dolphin searching for her.
The dolphin located her and delivered her to Poseidon. She was understandably annoyed, but
Poseidon rewarded the dolphin by giving him a place in the heavens.Amphitrite was a Nereid (see later). She was the Goddess of the Sea. Her symbol is thedolphin. The stories say that she was not a jealous wife, and didn't care if her husband slept with anyone else. Her children were Proteus (Lord of the Seals), Triton, Albion, Benthesicyme, Charybdis (the monster), Rhode.
Ariadne
She was the daughter of King Minos and Pasiphae. She fell in love with Theseus and helped him escape the Labyrinth after he killed the Minotaur. There are three different endings to this story. One,
she and her child by Theseus died in childbirth . Two, Theseus took her to Naxos where he left her to marry Dionysus or to just die there. Three, Theseus abandoned her and she hanged herself.
Thetis was the chief of the Nereids. She was prophesied to bear a son stronger than its father, so Zeus decreed that she must marry a mortal. She married Peleus and bore Achilles.Alcyone
In Greek mythology, Alcyone is the Goddess of the sea, the Moon, Calm, and Tranquility. It is she who brings life to death and death to life.
Aesclepius (Asclepius, Aesculapius, Asklepios)
Legendary physician and god of medicine. He was the son of Apollo and Coronis, a beautiful maiden of Thessaly. Angry because Coronis was unfaithful to him, Apollo killed her and took his infant son to the centaur Chiron to be raised. Aesclepius learned all that Chiron knew about the art of healing and soon became a great physician. Because he committed the unpardonable sin of raising a man from the dead, the god Zeus killed him with a thunderbolt. The serpent and cock were sacred to him.
Atalanta
Disappointed that she was not a boy, her father abandoned her on a mountainside shortly after her birth. She was rescued and nursed by a she-bear and later raised by hunters. By the time she had grown up, she was a skilled hunter. She is most famous for her participation in the Boar Hunt of Calydon. In another tale, Atalanta was a fleet-footed runner who offered to marry anyone who could defeat her in a race. Those who lost were killed. The youth Hippomenes (or Melanion) won with
the aid of Aphrodite who gave him three of the golden apples of the Hesperides. He dropped them one by one, and by stopping to pick them up, Atalanta lost the race. She and Hippomenes were later turned into lions because of an affront to the gods.
Ajax The Lesser (Aias)
A son of Oileus, King of Locris. He was one of the heroes in the Trojan War, but had severe
character flaws, such as being arrogant, boastful and quarrelsome. He captured Cassandra, a
daughter of King Priam, and raped her. He earned the enmity of his Greek allies because of this and
left Troy to return home. His ship sunk in a storm but he survived. He boasted, long and loud about
his escape, only to incur the wrath of Poseidon, who cast him back into the sea where he drowned.
