The temples of Chandragiri hill that served as the abode of Acharya Bhadrabahu and his followers. During their stay at this place, Bhadrabahu realised that his end was near, and summoning his followers he bade them to proceed further south to spread the faith. He took the vow of "sallekana" (fasting to death) attended by his disciple, Chandragupta. After Acharya Badhrabahu's death, Chandragupta Maurya continued to live on the hill, worshipping the footprints of his preceptor and ended his days by performing sallekana. Accourding to an inscription dated 7th Century AD, in course of time 700 monks accomplished "samadhi marana" (death while meditating).

Footprints of Acharya Bhadrabahu

Enshrined in a shallow cavern are the sacred footprints of Shrutakevalin Bhadrabahu. It is the most holy spot on this hill.
