ONE TREE HILL
SEASON 1

Set in the fictional suburban town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, One Tree Hill began during the beginning of the varsity basketball season for the Tree Hill High School Ravens. The three main characters who were introduced in the pilot were: Lucas Scott: the boy from the wrong side of the tracks who adored the game of basketball. Nathan Scott: Lucas' paternal half-brother who grew up with everything that Lucas didn't, and Peyton Sawyer: Nathan's troubled but talented girlfriend who shared a unique bond with Lucas. By the third episode two more characters had joined the ensemble including; Haley James: Lucas' quirky best friend and Brooke Davis; Peyton's wild counterpart and fellow cheerleader. Lucas, a literate young teenager who loved playing hoops at "The River Court" with his friends, was suddenly thrust into the world of high school basketball, which was also the world of his estranged father, Dan Scott and his half-brother, Nathan Scott. Lucas joined the basketball team, much to the dismay of his mother, Karen Roe, and the support of his paternal uncle Keith Scott. Lucas was ridiculed out of fear by Nathan and Dan, however he didn't stop when he realized that he had the talent to make it in high school basketball.

Nathan Scott, Lucas' half-brother was the polar opposite of Lucas. He lived in a mansion; his parents owned a beach house. He was popular and was privileged enough to call Peyton Sawyer his girlfriend. Nathan's abrasive personality was also something that he and Lucas did not share. However, the two did share the same father, which would cause conflict with the two as Lucas joined the high school basketball team. Suddenly, Nathan was forced to battle with Lucas over the lead spot on the basketball team. This feud was influenced by his father, Dan and his mother; Deb Scott did not support the two brothers who were constantly bickering. Nathan found a way to get under Lucas' skin by expressing interest in his best friend, Haley James. Rather sooner than later, Nathan truly admired Haley sparking a romance that would lead to more than just revenge.

Peyton Sawyer was the damsel in distress of One Tree Hill. Her mother had died when Peyton was in elementary school and her father; Larry Sawyer was never around due to work. Peyton's emotional outlet was art. Many of her drawings and paintings displayed tragedy and angst. Peyton also shared a choppy relationship with boyfriend, Nathan. The two often disagreed and soon broke up as Peyton began to see something more in Nathan's half brother; Lucas.

Haley was the sidekick to Lucas. She was a straight-A student who never got in trouble, and never knew what being popular was like. That all changed when she began dating Lucas' half-brother Nathan. Lucas disapproved of this relationship, even when Haley told Lucas that she was only tutoring Nathan so he would leave Lucas alone. Eventually, their relationship turned into more and as the months progressed and Haley found herself falling in love with Nathan. Finally, Haley was doing something for herself, and not for anyone else. Brooke burst onto the scene as the vixen of Tree Hill. She had no inhibitions, and didn't regret that fact. Peyton and Brooke had been best friends ever since Peyton's mother's death. Brooke served, as comic relief early in the basketball season, however there was a person with feelings underneath Brooke's crazy exterior. Lucas brought the deepness in Brooke out, and soon the two had fallen for each other. Brooke admitted that she was in love with Lucas, just as their relationship was coming to end; and Brooke would have lost both her true love and her best friend.

The Tree Hill Ravens had been undefeated for the entire season, but that didn't mean the inhabitants of Tree Hill didn't hold any angst. Nathan's mother, Deb, expressed interest to leave her husband after Dan had shown little to no true concern for his son, after Nathan overdosed on drugs to enhance his basketball skill. Nathan wanted nothing to do with this divorce, causing him to be emancipated from his parents and move into his own apartment. Lucas' mother, Karen left Tree Hill for cooking school in Italy, and upon returning she was struck with the news that Lucas had been in a near-fatal car accident. This ruined a budding relationship with Lucas' uncle Keith, when she learned that he was the one driving with a dangerous blood-alcohol level. Lucas and Peyton found their bond too strong to hold back, even after Lucas had started dating Brooke that the two resorted to a secret affair. When, Brooke discovered this affair she spat words of disgust and hatred to both Lucas and Peyton.

Meanwhile, Peyton had started a friendship with another basketball player, Jake Jageilski. Jake was a teen father who trusted Peyton to look after his precious daughter, Jenny. Jenny's mother, Nikki showed up and wanted to keep Jenny all to herself after Jake had dismissed her. This caused Jake to leave town, much like all of the other people in Peyton's life had left her. Brooke told Lucas that she was pregnant with his child, however she lied to him because he had called her a slut. In the end it all hurts just the same..." are the words that a near-tears Brooke told Lucas. He had lied to her, now she lied to him and it didn't matter because they were both hurt. Haley and Nathan's relationship seemed to be the only positive thing going on in Tree Hill. The two had proven unstoppable and had fallen deeply in love. Nathan did make a few mistakes regarding pornography on the computer, but that didn't change the everlasting love that Nathan and Haley would share. Haley had reformed Nathan to be a better person; Haley caused even Lucas and Nathan to reconcile.

In the season finale, the Tree Hill Ravens had made it the playoffs and Lucas had begun playing after a medical leave of absence for his hurt shoulder. Dan had also coached the players for this game after the patriarchal Coach Whitey Durham was hospitalized. This caused strife with the newly bonded brothers and their estranged father. Peyton and Brooke had reconciled as well, teaming up to lead Nikki away from finding Jenny. Nathan and Haley made an important decision, as Dan told his soon-to-be ex-wife that he was always in love with Karen. Keith was leaving town after proposing to Karen and being turned down.

Lucas was set to join him after the basketball season was over. The Ravens lost their playoff game after Lucas attempted to shoot a three-pointer. Nathan stuck by Lucas as Dan verbally ripped him to shreds. The two were now fully brothers who shared disgust for their father. Nikki asked Brooke where Jake was and Brooke told her. However, Brooke told Nikki that Jake had gone to Seattle, not to Savannah, where Jake actually sought refuge. Dan walked in on a broken Deb and Keith sleeping together, which led to his heart attack a day later. Lucas left town, but not before leaving a letter for Peyton and Brooke and not before discovering that Nathan and Haley had gotten married.

ONE TREE HILL
SEASON 2

The second season began the day after the events of the first season finale occurred; Nathan and Haley had gotten married, while Lucas and Keith relocated to Charleston to begin a new life (however their stay was short lived) and Brooke and Peyton had reconciled after their friendship had been torn apart over their mutual attraction to Lucas. Meanwhile, the adults of Tree Hill (besides Keith) were dealing with their own turmoil. Deb sat bedside to an unconscious Dan, Karen mourned Lucas' move, while Whitey awaited the results of his mysterious eye-condition. The season premiere revealed how Haley was granted the permission to be married to the emancipated Nathan. Her parents (who had also married young) gave her permission, knowing that Haley was a responsible girl. When Deb found out that Nathan had married Haley she exclaimed that Nathan was the one who caused his father's heart attack. Meanwhile, Peyton had hid the letter that Lucas had written her and Brooke in fear of losing her best friend again, and Lucas and Keith made their way back to Tree Hill after discovering Dan was in a coma.

As spring began in Tree Hill, changes began to take place. Lucas turned over a new leaf (and a new haircut), promising to return to the person who he had been previous to becoming a part of the basketball team. Karen had aspirations to return to college and enrolled at the local junior college (where she met professor/boyfriend Andy Hargrove). Brooke's family had lost all their money, causing Brooke to see another side of life, while the absence of Jake left Peyton stunned and depressed. Keith took over Scott Motors, while Dan was recovering from his heart attack, and Dan expressed interest to get to know Lucas better. There were also two new students who arrived for their spring semester at Tree Hill High, siblings Felix (Michael Copon) and Anna Tagarro (Daniela Alonso). They had relocated to Tree Hill after rumors about Anna's sexuality began to surface at their ultra-conservative boarding school. Felix was an outgoing, humorous, "player" (once referred as "Brooke in pants") who didn't click well with the other students of Tree Hill High. He did form a friendship with resident-geek Mouth, but that friendship was tainted after they both expressed feelings for Brooke. At first, Brooke merely thought of Felix has just another boy toy that she could use and lose. For, she was not about to give up her heart, and then have it be smashed. The two, however did become more than "friends with benefits" for a short time. Brooke ended their relationship after discovering that Felix had tagged the word "DYKE" on Peyton's locker because he was angry and jealous. Lucas met Anna on "Dare Night" and the two began to date, much to Felix's objection, their relationship never did spawn into anymore more than minor puppy love, because Lucas still had strong feelings for Brooke, while Anna couldn't figure out her sexuality. Felix's mistake of vandalizing a student's locker caused him to be expelled from Tree Hill High School, and his parents made the decision to send him to military school after Anna told school authorities of Felix's actions. Not long after, Anna made the decision to return to her boarding school and own up to her sexuality. This decision came after a visit from ex-girlfriend Darby and after Anna came out to her parents. Both of the Tagarro children experienced a lot in their short time in Tree Hill, however by the time they left it was clear who had grown from her experiences.

Brooke had always been the "partaay-girl" with the bad-grades and reputation. With her father's business gone under, Brooke ended her Junior year in high school more independent than the shallow cheerleader that appeared at the beginning of Season 1. After her first job, Brooke realized that she had more to offer than just mere comic relief and moronic cheers. She decided to run for Student Body President against some of the most scholarly students at Tree Hill High. One stuck out more than the others, Erica Marsh (Katherine Bailess), tried to discourage Brooke for running for such an ambitious position. Brooke did not back down. She stood strong, even when Erica turned to dirty politics, and was triumphant after Mouth gave a moving Peer-speech to the entire student body. Brooke was far too busy to worry about boys, and had no problem discarding her relationship with Felix. By the end of the second semester, feelings started arising for Lucas once again. Brooke's parents decided to relocate to California after Brooke's father received an amazing job opportunity, however it was Lucas who found a new home for Brooke; at Karen's house, in Lucas' room while Lucas tried living with Dan. As soon as feelings resurfaced for Lucas, Brooke found remnants of his relationship with Peyton, which led her to believe he still had feelings for her. On the second day of summer vacation, when Brooke was set to leave Tree Hill to spend her summer in California with her parents, Lucas declared his love for her. However, Brooke was taken aback by this declaration and left without ever stating her feelings to Lucas. Nonetheless, Brooke turned into a responsible, loyal and loving friend to Karen, Peyton, Nathan and Lucas. "The girl behind the red door" had grown up during her junior year.

Nathan had also gone through a metamorphosis in the first and second seasons. His relationship with Haley had turned Nathan into a noble, loving young man who wasn't afraid to take chances. As their marriage began (circa late-February 2005; Tree Hill time) Haley and Nathan had never loved each-other more. Then arrogant musician Chris Keller showed up in town, and led Haley to realize that her aspirations of being a famous singer could become far more than a daydream. Nathan was, understandably, threatened by Chris, and surprised of Haley's persistence to see him. After all, Nathan had turned down High Flyers, a prestigious basketball camp for Haley. He also made the brave decision to get himself tested for Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) the genetic condition that caused Dan's heart attack. The results turned up negative, while Haley and Nathan's marriage took a turn for the worse. Haley began lying to Nathan about seeing Chris, while Nathan continued to display his commitment to Haley. Haley's older sister Taylor James (Lindsay McKeon) showed up in Tree Hill after dropping out of college and took up residence with Haley and Nathan. It was revealed that Taylor was the girl whom Nathan had lost his virginity to during the fall of his Freshman year in high school. Nathan came clean with Haley, thinking that this revelation and Nathan's honesty would only strengthen their marriage. One week later, Nathan discovered that Haley had e-mailed Chris once (Taylor pretended to e-mail him numerous other times) and had even kissed him when he left town. That same night of the discovery, Chris Keller appeared in Tree Hill once again as the opening act for the Wrec Room Tour (the televised version of the One Tree Hill tour). Haley ended up leaving Tree Hill to pursue her musical career, leaving Nathan all alone. Nathan reverted to form, and got suspended from school for calling his teacher a slut and drinking in class. Subsequently, he was arrested (along with Lucas) for drinking and driving, and he even punched his father, Dan, after he made an insulting remark about Haley. After a failed attempt to bring Haley home, he and Lucas ventured off with Nathan's Uncle Cooper to experience professional car-racing. Nathan, after experiencing flashbacks of Haley, Nathan swerved and hit the wall of the racetrack. While in a coma, Nathan dreamt of what life would be like if Dan had married Karen instead of his mother, Deb. Once he awoke, Lucas asked him if he hit the wall on purpose, in an attempt to commit suicide. The question remained unanswered; however Nathan did mend his relationship with his mother. Nathan decided that he would attend the summer basketball camp at High Flyers, even though his mother had just been released from drug rehab. Deb and Nathan also wanted to completely rid themselves from Dan, forever. But Nathan's demons would soon catch up to him. The night he moved out of his apartment and back into the Scott home, there was a surprise waiting outside of his front door. The bad boy of Tree Hill had made a complete 180 from the person he had once been.

Haley James (Scott), ever the tragic hero of season 2, once virtuous and dependable changed during Season 2. Before, Haley had never made any impulsive decisions, however once she realized that impulsive didn't mean bad, she married Nathan and later sought out her dreams of being famous. This however meant that she had to leave Nathan and ruin their marriage. She conquered her stage fright after the opening night at TRIC, when Peyton's performer (Chris Keller) decided that he didn't want to play to a crowd of tasteless teenagers. Haley's performance was well-received by her peers and sparked Chris Keller's interest in her. He asked Haley be the female vocal in a song he was working on. The song was a cover of Ryan Adams' "When the Stars Go Blue." Haley and Chris bonded during their recording session, causing Haley to lie to Nathan about her whereabouts while he was out of town. Haley did her best to stay honest and faithful to Nathan, but Chris didn't stop at trying to pursue the married woman. Haley drifted further and further from Lucas during her Junior year, so she had no constant council. After singer, Michelle Branch expressed interest in her voice; Haley made the decision to accompany Chris and Branch on their tour. When Nathan confronted Haley in the midst of the successful tour, Haley told him that she had rushed into everything too fast. This attitude soon changed, after Nathan had been in a near-fatal car accident. Haley decided to rush home, even if it meant being cut from the tour. However, Nathan advised Haley not to come home because it was time that they both pursue their dreams. Then, Dan presented Haley with annulment papers, already signed by Nathan. After Lucas and Brooke visited Haley in New York; Haley made the final decision to stay on the tour and never look back. However, that wasn't the case when she showed up at the Scotts' front doorstep.

Peyton, who had also changed from the abrasive stand-offish girl that used to be the girlfriend of Nathan Scott, was now strong and wise. Her friends turned to her for advice and counsel, but that didn't mean she had all the answers. Peyton had an idea to start an all-ages club night at one of Tree Hill's local clubs. She met with a notorious band manager, who at first brushed her off for being so young, but then softened and told her that she had what it took to be a smart business-woman. Minutes later, he presented her with a hit of cocaine. Peyton took part in drug consumption, and kept it secret from her friends. Why was she so upset?

Karen had just found a great place for a business expansion, which meant Peyton would get her all-ages club night. However, something was missing. More than one thing was missing. Her father had left to begin his dredging business, her mother; Anna Sawyer had died, and Jake and Jenny had left town to escape the clutches of Nikki; Jenny's bitter mother. Peyton longed for Jake, and in the midst of all of her friend's dramas she found herself being overlooked.

Peyton's depression continued after realizing how alone she was at the Tree Hill formal. The day after, she discovered the word "DYKE" painted on her school-locker. In response to the hate crime (even though Peyton was not a lesbian) she was suspended from school after wearing a shirt that was deemed offensive to the student body. Peyton was now more isolated than ever, and thought she only had one thing to turn to; cocaine. Peyton was very close to participating in a drug-deal with Rick, but Jake magically showed up to rescue Peyton from her ultimate downfall. Jake and Peyton retrieved Jenny and made a home at Peyton's house. Jake and Peyton didn't know what to make of their strange relationship, however sooner rather than later they did begin dating. Peyton opted to take it slow; she had only had sex with one person, and didn't want to rush anything with a boy who was much more experienced than her. After it was clear that the two had fallen in love, they did have sex with each-other. Then Nikki returned from Seattle explaining that a judge had granted her sole custody of Jenny. Jake couldn't let Nikki have Jenny and sent her with Whitey to relatives in Florida. He then turned himself in for the kidnapping of Jenny Jagielski. Peyton and Jake's relationship did not fizzle, even though he was in jail. Jake's love had made Peyton a better person and an optimist. She reconciled with Lucas, and regained her position as the moral center of the Tree Hill gang. Peyton's persistence with Jake's lawyers did help his case and he was to be released from prison. However, Nikki had found Jenny and kidnapped her. Jake had to leave Peyton, once again. Peyton was torn up, but realized she had gotten what she had wished for: everlasting love. A mysterious woman turned up the day after Jake left, informing Peyton that she was a reporter from the Alternative Press magazine who was assigned a story on "the girl who got the Wreckers and Jimmy Eat World to play her club night", that girl was Peyton. However, this woman was not who she seemed.

Lucas began the second season longing to return to his roots, rather than the unsatisfying young man he had become. He settled down and began dating Anna, but that relationship ended after Lucas realized he was in love with Brooke. Lucas also learned that he had Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic disease he got from his father, Dan. However, he couldn't tell his mother, or anyone, this because it would ruin his life. To protect Keith from the devious clutches of his brother and to get his medication, Lucas made the decision to move in with Dan. Lucas and Dan did actually bond for some time. They shared the same appreciation for classic American Literature and Dan expressed genuine interest in his son's life. However, Lucas had another interest on his mind. He wanted to bring down Dan for hurting his mother, Deb, Nathan, Keith, Jules, Whitey and all the other people who Dan had ruined. Lucas believed that he could complete decimate Dan's life as revenge for Dan's years of pure evil. Lucas did discover suspicious activity at the car dealership, however he needed expert opinion. He sought the help of his mother's boyfriend, Andy and the two teamed up against Dan. Lucas also had to be there for his brother, Nathan who had been emotionally damaged after his wife, Haley had left him. Lucas could relate to Nathan because Haley had been his best friend who left without even saying goodbye. Lucas also was there for Brooke, who needed help in her presidential campaign. Anna even wanted Lucas to stand by her, as secrets were revealed about her sexuality. Lucas showed allusions to his father after he lied to his brother about going after Dan, but Lucas believed he was doing the right thing. Andy left Tree Hill, but he also left important clues to Dan's scam. Lucas could finally take down his father. Dan found out about his son's plan and rearranged everything to make it look like the whole scam was just to test Lucas' loyalty. Obviously, Lucas had failed and declared that he could finally let Dan go. Nathan also discovered that Lucas had been lying, and told him that once he returned from High Flyers, they would no longer be brothers. Lucas was then semi-rejected from Brooke, as she left for California. Lucas began the season wanting to become a better version of the person he had become, however as the school year closed he had lost all he had worked for.

The adults of Tree Hill also had eventful lives during the second season. Karen went back to school to study business and found true love in her professor, Andy Hargrove. Dan spent the season attempting to get back at Keith for sleeping with Deb by hiring Jules to get Keith to fall in love with her. Keith did fall in love with Jules, however Jules fell in love with him too, and they got engaged. Jules, filled with guilt left Keith before reaching the altar, which prompted Keith's exit of Tree Hill. Deb had started a pain-killer addiction due to her tumultuous marriage to the town villain. She checked herself into rehab after realizing she had to get better for her son.

The season finale brought returns, exits and scheming to Tree Hill. Karen left Tree Hill to go to New Zealand with Andy, however Andy went mysteriously AWOL. Jake left Tree Hill to find Jenny. A mysterious woman came into Peyton's life, and Deb and Nathan conspired to leave Dan forever. The last ten minutes of the season finale were perhaps the most exciting of the season. After being dismissed from his father and brother, Lucas returned home to confess his feelings for Brooke with a "goodbye" kiss. They both knew the kiss meant more than that, however a tearful Brooke didn't know how to react, and she left Lucas without any clue as to what she felt. After receiving chilling IMs from a ghostly screen name, Peyton was convinced that the so-called "reporter" called Ellie was up to no good. Ellie showed up at Peyton's door ready to reveal the truth behind her entry into Tree Hill. She was Peyton's biological mother. Upon returning to the Scott home, Nathan and Deb reunited. As Nathan was retrieving luggage from the front porch Haley stood there hoping to reunite with her husband. After manipulating everyone around him once again, Dan returned to the dealership thinking he was triumphant. He had received a gift of alcohol with a note with the words "For everything you've done." inscribed on it. Thinking this was a gift for his services at the dealership, Dan drank celebrating his many evil winnings. A white substance was found in Dan's alcohol, causing him to pass out. But not before getting a glimpse at the person who was going to ultimately rid Tree Hill of Dan's evil by starting fire to the dealership leaving an unconscious Dan trapped inside.
