Chapter Two

All hell had broken loose.  That had to be it.  There was no other logical sane explanation for it.  Perhaps the water was contaminated, and both men had drunk from it.  How else could she explain what had just happened back there in the dojo?

As if she were comically frozen, her jaw dropped in realization.

TWO men – two extremely fine (though she would never for a second tell the fish-sauce slicked chicken head) men had been fighting over her.  She allowed herself one moment where she could revel in feminine glory.  Finally, someone had noted the beauty that was her.

It was with greatest reluctance that she relinquished her hold on that thought.  Still however, it didn’t explain why those emotions had remained dormant in those men – until now.  Perhaps Tae would have a better explanation for this.

As her feet resumed movement, she had the strangest sensation that she was being followed.  Surely she had bought herself some time after sending those two men on a scenic tour of Tokyo.  Whirling around, she found herself getting confused when an empty alley greeted her.  Unfortunately, when she decided to resume her original course, there were puffs of cigarette smoke rising beautifully.

She nearly groaned aloud.  The last thing she needed to see was Saitoh.  Golden eyes gleamed above her as if he had known her thoughts.  She cursed him for being so damn tall.

“Saitoh,” she said wearily.  She gestured appropriately as she continued, “Kenshin and tori-atama are somewhere back there.  So if you’ll please excuse me…”

Still his lean form stood in front of her.  She bristled in annoyance.  She really wanted to talk to Tae, and get her opinion on what was going on.  “Oi! Move it, buddy!! You’re blocking me! Go play with the other men back there!” She mumbled almost to herself, “Maybe you can figure out what is going on.”

He coughed unexpectedly, shocking her.  She gaped at him, staring with wide-eyed disbelief at the Mibu’s wolf who if she was not mistaken was blushing.

Saitoh was blushing.

Her jaw dropped.

“Kamiya-san,” his voice nearly squeaked, before coughing once again.  In a more normal and masculine tone, he said, “I was not expecting to run into you here.”  His unusual golden eyes glinted.  “Battousai isn’t here, is he?”

Stunned, all Kaoru could do was shake her head.

“Good,” he growled possessively.  Kaoru’s confusion rose astronomically – it was one thing to be recognized for her beauty.  It was another to provoke such powerful reactions from men who were normally immune to her.  Was she really that much of a mankiller?

She was startled out of her thoughts as a clammy hand grasped hers.  His eyes shone earnestly as he stammered, “Ka-kami-Kamiya-san… will you ple-ase… do me…”  He choked as if running out of air.

She yanked her hand out of his and smacked him against the wall.  She screeched at him, “Do you?!?!”

His face turning even redder, he stuttered even more.  “No, no!! I mean… do… do me…” The rest of his words, something about doing him the honour, went unheard as the head of police went soaring through Tokyo to join his comrades in flight.

Kaoru almost yanked her hair out in frustration.  “What on earth is going on?” She ran off, leaving behind her a trail of smoke, and hoping to God that she wouldn’t run into anyone else.

Bursting through the doors of the Akabeko, Kaoru yelled out, “TAE!!!!!!!!!!”

Customers poked their head through their respective rooms, and stared at her curiously.  She had to admit, she was becoming slightly unnerved by whatever was causing this strange sickness.  And perhaps she was being overly paranoid, but she was feeling the telltale prickles at the back of her neck from being stared at.

From out of nowhere, Tae rushed out and grabbed Kaoru’s arm.  “Let’s go!”

She looked at her friend in confusion.  “What?!”

“Just run before they tear this place apart!!”

Kaoru barely had time to take in a breath before Tae had dragged her off.

“What the hell happened??” Tae demanded.

“What happened?! What do you mean? I’m the one being accosted…”

Tae glared at her.  “My customers, just a few moments before you arrived, just about went berserk.  They were all having this talk about you when all of a sudden, these brawls broke out.”

“I don’t understand,” Kaoru wailed plaintively.

As if Kaoru hadn’t said a thing, Tae continued blithely, “They all wanted you.  But little do they know, your heart was only set on one person.”

“That’s what I came to see you about! Kenshin! He’s…”

Tae asked fiercely, “Did he touch you?”

“Tae!!!” Kaoru exclaimed in embarrassment.  This was certainly unlike Tae to ask such personal and delicate questions.  Plus she wasn’t entirely sure if it was any of Tae’s business.

“I’ll kill him, that I surely will.”  Her eyes widened in horror at Tae’s words.  “He’s missed out on what a beautiful woman you are, and how brave you are.  He wanted to protect you, and now he’ll risk it all? Risk putting you in danger?!” Tae screeched.

Kaoru backed away slowly at the fighting light in her friend’s eyes.  Tae crooned, “I won’t let him harm my beloved Kaoru.”

“NOOOOOO!!!!”

Birds lighted from the trees in the forest around Toyko, and, somewhere further away, Shinomori Aoshi flinched, sensing a disturbance in the cosmos.

The sound of a frying pan connecting with someone's skull followed the scream.

Bad dream.  Veeeeery bad dream.  This was a dream, that's all it was - a very life-like bad dream.  Well, good, in the aspect that she was finally getting the recognition she deserved - but bad in the fact that it was from EVERY PERSON SHE RAN INTO.

"Tae!!  Tae!!  I didn't mean to hit you - or, well, yes I did, but you shouldn't have been saying funny things like that, Tae!!"

Rubbing her hand over her face wearily, Kaoru grumbled, "what else can go wrong?!"

There must have been something in the water.  That had to be it - and if that was the case, then she needed to get Tae to the clinic.  Who knew what being poisoned and then knocked unconscious with a frying pan could do to her?

Hefting Tae up under her arms, Kaoru grunted and began to drag her back out of the kitchen and into the streets.  As she passed through the restaurant with the manager passed out on her, she shot a glare to anyone who dared look at her funny.  "She's JUST A FRIEND," she screamed, swinging Tae out the door.  "JUST A FRIEND!!"

So far, she had punched Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Saitoh into a close orbit, and gave head-trauma to her best friend - Kaoru was feeling pretty sure that she couldn't do much worse as she headed down the busy streets.

If she had looked behind her, though, she would have realized that the three-carriage pile up that happened in front of the Akabeko was because the drivers had all been staring at her instead of the road.

Disclaimer: We own no part of Rurouni Kenshin or any other presences, other then Tenshi and Kirstian themselves, who will appear in this fic.  If we did, Kenshin wouldn't be as clueless as he normally is, and he'd be called Tub-by.  In any case, we have no money.  We spent it all on Sesshoumaru's spandex Halloween getup.  XD  So don't sue.  We'll sick Vash on you.
