According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, over one million bikes are stolen every year in the United States. That's 1.2 bikes every minute. The average value of a bike is $293.00. This crime cost Americans between $800 million and $1 billion annually. The majority of these stolen bikes when recovered never get returned to owners, because Law Enforcement officials cannot locate the owners. For this reason the Taneytown Police Department has a bicycle registration program for residents. Bicycle owners can register their bikes locally through the Taneytown Police bike registration database, or for a small fee through a national database with the National Bike Registry. Owners who register their bikes locally through the Taneytown Police bike registration database will receive a certificate of registration and will greatly enhance the chances of their bike being returned if lost or stolen in Taneytown. Owners who register their bikes through the National Bike Registry for a small fee will receive a certificate of registration, non-removable decals to place on their bike and will greatly enhance the chances of their bike being returned if lost or stolen anywhere in the Nation. Contact the Taneytown Police for more information.
