.: The Story Behind the Twins :. |
~ Plot based on Fatal Frame, a survival/horror game by Haruji Sora ~
Long ago, a village buried deep in the forests of Japan gambled with their lives and opened the Hellish Abyss, a gateway into the fearsome bowels of the underworld. The Hellish Abyss has been the source of the village's power for as long as they can remember, giving them strength in exchange for gruesome sacrifices. When the Hellish Abyss began to rumble, the villagers sacrificed a foreigner using the Cutting Ceremony -- stretching his body with ropes and then cutting his flesh, causing as much physical and emotional pain as possible before casting him into the Hellish Abyss. The actual sacrifice was called the Hidden Ceremony, and took place deep underground. The unfortunate visitor who had been sacrificed was called the Kusabi.
The Hellish Abyss would normally be appeased long enough for the villagers to prepare and perform the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. At regular intervals in the village, twins would be born. The villagers believed that twins are really one person, separated at birth. The energy generated when the twins became one again was immense, and served to seal the Hellish Abyss when the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual was performed. Before the ritual, the twins would be confined to two houses, joined by the Earth Bridge (an underground cavern connecting the two houses) and the Heaven Bridge (a wooden covered walkway stretching between the second stories of each house). During this confinement, or "purification," the twins were allowed to pass freely between the two houses but not to leave and travel the village streets. Female twins were called the Twin Shrine Maidens, but occasionally male twins would be used, and were called the Alter Twins.
During the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, which took place deep underground, the older twin strangled the younger, then threw her body into the Hellish Abyss. The spirit of the younger twin took the shape of a crimson butterfly, and served to appease the rumbles of the Hellish Abyss. The older twin was called the Remaining, and stayed on Earth. The Remaining bore a mark resembling a crimson butterfly on her throat, and oftentimes their hair turned white. They were both respected and feared.
Two Shrine Maidens, Yae and Sae, did not want to perform the Ritual. You see, in order for the Ritual to be a complete success, the older twin must want to kill the younger, and the younger twin must want to die. Yae loved Sae too much to kill her, so they tried to escape their fate. A Remaining from a prior ritual helped them leave the village, but their absence was discovered and the villagers took chase. Sae, always physically weaker (but more spiritually sensitive) than Yae, fell behind. In her hurry to catch up, she slipped down a steep mountain slope, breaking her leg. Yae searched for her, but became lost in the forest, Sae's last words ringing in her ears: "You promised...we would always be together..."
Sae was recaptured and taken back to the village, where the priests decided to attempt the Ritual using her alone. They hung her, then cast her body into the Hellish Abyss -- but it was not enough. The seal on the Hellish Abyss broke, and the Repentance commenced -- the punishment that the Hellish Abyss sought on the village if it was not regularly appeased. Darkness, called the Malice, welled out of the Hellish Abyss, engulfing the entire village. Some of the villagers died in madness; others opted to commit suicide rather than face the Malice. Sae and the Kusabi emerged from the Hellish Abyss and slaughtered the villagers -- her maniacal laughter was said to be heard even outside of the village. The region is now frozen in time, repeating the night of the failed Ritual over and over again in perpetual darkness while Sae waits for her older sister to return.
After the Repentance, Yae returned to find the village gone -- swallowed by the Repentance. Here memories were lost, and she remained at the site, crying, until she was found by a folklorist's assistant -- the same folklorist who had been sacrificed as Kusabi and emerged later on to help Sae slaughter the villagers. Yae eventually married the assistant, and they had a child together. Yae died when she hung herself from a Cherry Blossom Tree.

.: You promised...we would always be together... :. |
Bisae is the reincarnation of the original Sae. She is physically very weak, but is highly sensitive to spirits; they often use her as a medium to the physical world. She depends heavily upon her older twin sister, Biyae, and is very attached to her. Their childhood home was very close to the site of the abandoned village -- the woods where they used to play are the very same woods that conceal the cursed village. It is said that if you became lost in those woods, you would emerge at the top of the path leading down to the village.
Once, when playing in the forest, Biyae made a promise to Bisae. "I promise that, no matter what happens, we'll always be together." Despite this promise, the twins grew steadily further apart as they aged, and Bisae was constantly afraid that because of her physical weakness, Biyae would leave her behind. One day, while the twins were running along a mountain path, Bisae slipped and fell as she tried to catch up to her sister, sliding down a steep mountain slope and breaking her leg. Nowadays, she seldom moves above a fast walk.
Bisae is occasionally influenced by a certain female ghost (wonder who that could be). During these supernatural episodes, she runs off, abandoning her sister, oftentimes traveling routes that are locked or closed off when Biyae tries to find her. If Biyae manages to find her twin, Bisae sometimes acts as if she cannot see her, other times (rarely, however) disappears to be replaced by a pale femme in a bloody white kimono who chases Biyae (possibly bent on murder), and still other times calls her "Yae" and talks about promises, rituals, and being left behind...the whole time in a voice that is not her own. Sae often appears to Bisae while she is having an episode. When Sae releases her influence on Bisae, however, she becomes entirely normal, with no conscious memory of her supernatural adventure. Biyae can sometimes share her sister's visions by touching her.
