.: Story :. |
Jean leaned against the solid brick wall, feeling the cold seep through his damp shirt. This rain had lasted forever...he wondered when it would let up. He hoped soon -- people didn't want to take out their garbage in the rain, and if they didn't leave the cans out with enough time before the collection came, Jean would have nothing to eat. He thought he could see a bit of blue out on the horizon, but the clouds overhead were angry and black, sending down torrents of water and soaking him to the bone. He had a vague thought that he should get under cover, and started slogging slowly down the wet sidewalk.
Tiny rivulets of water flowed across the concrete, and he watched them as he walked. One started flowing just as he got to it, poking a tentative tendril out from the dead, brown grass. He lifted his bare foot and stepped on it, then drew his leg back under him and looked at the spot where it had been. The rivulet had taken the shape of his sole. He turned and walked on.
An alley was close by, he remembered. It ran behind a pizza place. He liked to go there sometimes, and sit and smell the pizza. It smelled good. They would throw out old boxes, and he would scrape the cheese from them. He loved pizza cheese.
There was no smell this time. The shop was closed. It was too late; there wouldn't be any more customers. Oh well, they would be open in the morning.
He sat down, back against the wall next to the dumpster. The rain was a little less here. He could sleep in the rain, but he didn't like to. Rain was too cold and wet. He liked the sun, but the sun didn't come out much this time of year. Mostly is rained, or was cloudy. Sometimes, though, it would be clear at night, and he would look up at the stars. He liked the stars -- they didn't judge him, or try to send him away. They stayed up in the sky, blinking at him, and he would blink back. He felt like he could touch them, some nights, and he would sleep and dream of flying, the stars like small, cool marbles flying with him.
He smiled at the thought. Maybe he would dream like that tonight. He closed his eyes. "N'kintei." He whispered. He heard the familiar contented hum, felt the soft body emerge from behind the dumpster. That was where N'kintei always was. N'kintei didn't like to move around much, except at night.
The familiar hum was followed by the familiar rancid stench, but Jean had learned not to mind that. N'kintei was always warm, and never judged him. Like the stars. Maybe N'kintei was a star...
And Jean fell asleep, with that thought floating silently in his head.
