There is a village in Japan that has brought a curse upon itself that will haunt it even after death. Amidst their homes, deep inside an underground cavern, lies the Hellish Abyss. The Abyss, a gateway into Hell itself, must be appeased...or the Repentance will come, punishing the villagers for their failure. When the rumblings of the Hellish Abyss grow severe, a foreigner is purified. He is kept in isolation until the ritual is prepared...then tied with ropes and slashed with sharp blades. He must suffer as much physical and emotional pain as possible...then he is thrown into the Abyss while he is still alive. He becomes the Kusabi. But sometimes, and ritual fails. Drastic measures must be taken...twins, born every ten years, perform the next sacrifice. The eldest strangles the youngest, then throws her body into the Abyss. Both must willingly perform the ritual. If not, it will fail. Yae and Sae Kurosawa loved each other. They ran away from the sacrifice...but Sae fell, and was caught. The villagers, desperate, completed the ritual without Yae...they hung Sae with a holy rope, and cast her body into the Hellish Abyss. The ritual failed. Sae and the Kusabi returned from the Abyss, and the Repentance commenced. Together, they slaughtered the entire village. Blood soaked the ground and ran down the walls...the world was awash in a sea of red. The village disappeared. Travellers walking past the site of the killings claim to hear a single woman, laughing maniacally...
