In All God's Village, a ritual must be regularly performed to appease the Hellish Abyss, a portal into Hell itself that haunts the village. One ritual, the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, involves two twins. The older twin must strangle the younger, throwing her body into the Abyss. This causes their spirits, seperated at birth, to meld once more, and the energy released by this seals the Abyss for another decade or so. The sacrificed twin's spirit takes the form of a crimson butterfly, which forms as a glowing mark on the twin's throat and lifts away to appease the Abyss. The survivor is called the Remaining, and is both feared and revered by the villagers. Their hair is bleached white, as if by age, seemingly because of the strain of the ritual. They also develop a mark on their throat identical to the one that forms on the throat of their sibling.
