Today I was in the comic store in the mall with my boyfriend just looking around at all the various interesting things in there and talking to the clerk about Star Wars. Soon a young boy strode up to the counter with a fistful of twenty and ten dollar bills in his hand, huffing and puffing like he had a smoker's cough. He looked behind the counter at the many packs of Pokemon cards and after a moment's hesitation he slapped a ten dollar bill onto the counter and said non-chalantly to the clerk, "I'll have a pack of Pokemon cards." As the clerk rang in the purchase and slid the cards to the boy, the boy looked like he was thinking hard. He made smalltalk with the clerk, asking him when the 'other guy' was going to be back. This made me think that this little boy came in here a lot. After a moment of silence, he put another bill onto the counter and said, "Better make it two packs." The clerk smiled knowingly and gave them to him. As the boy was about to leave, he said, "You know, these aren't for me, they're for a, uh, friend of mine," as if he had to excuse his addiction. The clerk just smiled and said, "I'll see you tomorrow." |
