Tango Adentro
My tango bio
|
My name is Peter, originally from Hong Kong, but Toronto, Canada, has been my home for over 25 years.
I have been dancing tango since 1998. At the time, I was living in Montevideo,
Uruguay. In case you don't know, it is located across the River Plate (Rio de la Plata)
from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Montevideo is the unknown twin brother of Buenos Aires, at least as far as tango is concern.
I started dancing tango because I was living there, so I thought I would immerse myself in
one more aspect of the local culture. Little did I know that tango would become
such a big part of my life.
After the initial beginner's struggle, I found myself unexplicably hooked; first to the music,
then to the dancing. To get myself into the mood, I would often listen to tango on my way to
the dance classes. The more I listened to the music, the more fascinated I became. There
was just such a variety. The dancing part, or at least the analysis of the figures, fitted
right in with my engineering background and my analytical streak.
I continued dancing when I returned to Toronto in 2000. Luckily for me, my work at the time
often brought me to Montreal, the Mecca of tango in Canada. It was during this period that
my technique matured, and I established my own style. As with all artistic developments, my
style will keep evolving, influenced by all the factors of my life experience. I look forward
to the next surprise around the bend that is awaiting me.
My current activities in Tango, in addition to dancing, is collection of music, learning about
the performers and reading the poetry in the tango lyrics. I also run an outdoor milonga during
the warmer months of Toronto.
