Biography and Discography

Tanita Tikaram

Biography

Tanita Tikaram was only 19 when she started to be recognized as a worldwide famous singer. She has recorded 5 albums (88-95) which together were sold in over 7 million copies. She has appeared in films as well as catwalks. She has given more than 1000 concerts all around the world. What is so characteristic about Tanita Tikaram is her exceptionally low and deep voice.

She was born on 12th August 1969 in Munster, Germany. Her mother is a Malaysian and father comes from Fiji. He used to serve in British army in Germany, but in 1982 the whole family moved to England and settled down in Basingstoke, Hampshire. She started writing lyrics very early. Tanita's first public performance took place in November 1982 at the London Mean Fiddler. She was a support for Warren Zenov's concert at the Hammersmith Odeon.

She signed a contract with Warner Brothers in 1988 and the same year she recorded her first album "Ancient Heart". Rod Argent (ex-Zombies) and a very experienced session musician Peter Van Hooke were the producers of this record. "Good Tradition" and "Twist In My Sobriety" instantly became top hits, first in England and very soon in Europe. The album proved to be a huge success - it was sold in 4 millions copies. Most of the year 1989 Tanita spent in tours.

Her second album "The Sweet Keeper" was released in1990. It contained such compositions as "We Almost Got It Together" or "Thursday's Child". A year later Tanita released her third album "Everybody's Angel". It was recorded in Bearsville Studio in Woodstock and was a co-production with Van Hook and Argent. In the same year Tanita started her second worldwide tour.

Another album hit the charts in 1992. It was "Eleven Kinds Of Loneliness". After having promoted this album Tanita decided it was time to rest and change something in her life. In the meantime she recorded her 5th album "Lovers In The City". She cut her hair, got interested in designing clothes and also tried to be an actress. After some time she started to miss music. She changed her manager, recording company and found a new producer - Marco Sabiu who worked with such musicians as Kylie Minogue, Take That, Dubstar and Moby. We can hear the results of all these changes in her newest album "The Cappuccino Songs", released in June 1998. The album has already become very successful in Europe.
