A family of German immigrants tried
New Braunfels in 1845, but no room.
So Ernst Gruene moved down the Gaudalupe River and established the city
of Gruene.
His family built most of the village buildings including a cotton gin
and the dance hall and saloon, the Gruene Hall.
In the 1920's the boll weevil and the depression forced the family to
go under. Only the Gruene Hall stayed open.
In the 1970's the estate was sold and a rebirth started. Gruene
is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
For us, wandering around Gruene was fun. Not too many cool
spots. We did find good ice cream in the General Store.
Bob found the new outhouse behind one of the shops.
The last pic is really the Gaudalupe River, way down there in the trees.
