1066 : England Invaded: William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, invaded England with the support of the Papacy, and claimed his right to the throne.
1542 : California Discovered: Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, commissioned by the Spanish crown, sailed into present-day San Diego Bay during the course of his explorations of the northwest shores of Mexico. It was the first sighting of California by a European.
1825 First Railway Locomotive runs: The invention of the steam-powered locomotive helped forge the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century. The British engineers Richard Trevithick and George Stevenson were the first innovators of the technology, and by September 28, 1825, the first public railway was running in England. 
1858 : Donati's comet, discovered by Giovanni Donati, becomes the 1st to be photographed. It was captured by an English commercial photographer, William Usherwood, using a portrait camera at a low focal ratio.
