Martha MacIsaac plans to take a break from the school books on Sunday night to watch the season premiere of Emily of New Moon.

"I'll probably be doing math or studying for exams. I'll be watching it with Jane Hennessey, who is my friend, stand-in and double," says MacIssac, who stars in the popular television series.

Emily of New Moon is returning to CBC Television with 20 new episodes beginning Sunday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.

"I'm glad that people will finally be able to get to see them because we worked so hard on them," says MacIsaac, 17.

Based on the books of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the series is the story of a free-spirited P.E.I. girl orphaned at the age of 11 whose vivid imagination and passion for writing puts her in conflict with her strict adoptive family. The series is set in the 1890s but Emily faces all the concerns and challenges confronting today's young teens in addition to the constraints of her times.

In Sunday night's episode — Ask Me No Questions, I'll Tell You No Lies — Emily and Ilse battle with issues of truth when they involve themselves in Aunt Laura's love life.

Besides MacIsaac, the all-star cast features among others two-time Genie award winner Sheila McCarthy, as the soft-spoken and fragile Aunt Laura; Susan Clark as the autocratic Aunt Elizabeth and Stephen McHattie as Cousin Jimmy, the slow witted but gifted relative who enriches Emily's life.

Emily of New Moon is currently broadcasted internationally in 26 countries, including Iceland, Denmark, Malta and Slovenia. The one-hour family classic drama series debuted in Canada on CBC Television Network Jan. 4, 1998.

Besides being involved in Emily, it's been an interesting year for MacIsaac, a Colonel Gray high school senior. She has just finished her third season as Bridgit in Eckhart, which can be seen on Teletoon. Recent credits also include starring as Wendy in Peter Pan at Toronto's Elgin Theatre and an appearance in her school musical Beauty and the Beast last May.

"I haven't been doing any auditions recently. In Toronto right now it's the quiet time of the year. So likely there will be nothing happening until next summer," she says.

But that's not to say that she's not busy. These days, she's working on the credits that she needs to complete her Grade 12 course requirements. Then after graduation, she plans to move to Toronto in early summer.

"I'll either get an apartment or move in with my cousins. "I'll either work a year and then go to school or I'll go right to school. At this point, I haven't decided what I want to do yet," says Martha, who is a member of the student council.

MacIsaac says she has mixed feelings now that the final episodes are airing. "I'm so happy that it's coming back on and people are going to get to finish seeing it. But it's kind of sad too that when the last (episode) is aired, it's finally over.

"I had so much fun. There was never a moment that I said, 'I wish that I was at school. I wish I was having a normal life.' It is what I wanted to do then and what I want to do now," she says.

Not only was it great to meet other actors, at home people were supportive. "It was such a great time. People were so wonderful to me. And at school whenever I went back, nobody treated me any differently. And I just loved it," she says.
