Memorial to Tanya Burr, killed 15 September 2002

Aged twelve to thirteen years

Tanya with Molly and Dougal's orphaned kittens snuggled up together in late January-early February 1994. The kittens had been born on 15 December 1993 only to have one (of three) accidentally smothered by the mother a couple of days later - and then someone poisoned Dougal when her kittens were five weeks old. Molly, who was elderly, then adopted them. Of the two kittens, Tammy is still here, as Tanya had decided that she would be her kitten. The other, known at that time as Tom Kitten, was subsequently given to a Whakarongo School friend, Seth Strawbridge. Seth was killed in December 2000 in a car crash. He and Tanya are the only Whakarongo School pupils from the last two decades who are now deceased. Dougal was named after the long-haired dog in the children's TV programme 'The Magic Roundabout', due to her long fur and short legs. In her earliest months of life she's had her hip broken and this probably led to her kitten suffocating under her.
