QUIZ 13

  1. A quartz sphere is 14.5cm in diameter. What will be its change in volume if it is heated from 30ºC to 200ºC? The coefficient of volume expansion of quartz is 10-6 (Cº)-1.

          Solution.

         We find the change in volume from

                   DV = V0bDT = (4/3)pr3

                         = (4/3)p(7.25cm)3[1 x 10-6(Cº)-1](200ºC - 30ºC) = 0.27cm3.

2.  Water boils at 100ºC. What is the temperature on Fahrenheit scale when water boils?

        Solution.

        We find the temperature from

                  F = [(9/5)T°C + 32]°F

                         = [(9/5)(100) + 32]°F

                         = 212°F.
