Desires

A true Slytherin, Tom Marvolo Riddle had a high level of ambition, which he has been aggressively trying to achieve long after he has left school. Riddle’s ambition was met with a high level of desire to kill his opponents, most especially Harry, his greatest threat, as dictated in the prophecy of Sybil Trelawney. The death of Harry, would of course mean a chance to rule without the threat of death and the jeopardy of his ambition. He has said that it was his desire to “conquer death.” This would equate to the murder of Harry, for neither one may live while the other dies. However what are Voldemort’s specific desires for full power? To rid the magical world of all those who are “too weak” to seek power? If that meant kill all those who are not Slytherins, then he may as well kill Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail), a previous Gryffindor, who’s case seems to point out at the questionable judgement of the Sorting Hat, for Wormtail had shown spectacular cowardice with his claim of submitting to Voldemort in exchange for the betrayal of the Potters. To exterminate all witches and wizards with no pure-blooded origin? If this is so, then there is no need to kill all of the pure-blooded Longbottom family, who we all know, have never been on the dark lord’s side. Or is it both conditions, plus the simple indication of a disposition against Voldemort, for he is also willing to kill those who have once been on his side but had decided never to return to him, such as Durmstrang headmaster, Igor Karkaroff, who fled to yet unknown territory when Voldemort returned to power. Karkaroff is an illustration of what Voldemort describes as one who is too weak to seek power? (See more in Ambitions and Motives). Lastly, is Voldemort’s ambition intended for the rule of the entire magical world? We assume that most of his death eaters are British in origin. Then again, all witches and wizards opposed to him knows and fears Voldemort, which indicates In Rowling’s world, it seems that the world power is Britain, in terms of its role in the potential creation of overwhelming disorder (Voldemort’s rise to full power) or the establishment of a state of peace (the thwarting of Voldemort by Harry Potter). In either situation, the players are both British in origin.
