Harry Gen Recs

These are gen recs especially starring Harry Potter. Consider them pure gen unless otherwise noted.

A Nice Cup of Tea and a Lie Down (PG?) by Bernice. Harry and Hagrid talk over a cup of tea. One shot.

A Promise Worth Keeping (PG-13) by Cas. AU. Before he ever hears of Hogwarts, Harry has a magical accident which has horrible repercussions for him. In a race to protect him, two old friends end up on opposite sides when the real danger lies elsewhere. Novel length.

A Question of Whom (PG?) by Raven (aka malfoypatriarch). Mention of Trioshipping. In the middle of his penultimate struggle, Harry wakes up in a bewilderingly normal world. An interesting concept. One shot.

A Run in Tights (PG-13) by cawti. Pure gen, except for leering. The Trio has to get to Platform 9 and 3/4 in time to catch the Hogwarts Express, but Death Eaters are everywhere. So how do they elude them? By dressing as Muggle schoolgirls, of course. This fic is cute and fun, but still manages to show the danger they're in. Long one shot.

Acts Infernal (PG) by Sam Vimes. Harry makes a journey to rescue his godfather. Epic. Novel length.

Alternative Therapy (PG-13) by lyras. After the War, Neville comes around to do Harry's gardening. Sweet. One shot.

And I Get By (PG-13?) by Silvia. There's an offhand reference to Ron liking some girl. Harry and Draco and their weird connection. I think if they're ever friends, it'll be like this. One shot.

Animagus (G) by Marysia. Harry doesn't want to deal with being human any more. One shot.

Anywhere But Here (G) by Sam Vimes. Five years after the Final Battle, Professor Snape runs into Harry Potter by the seashore. They talk. I'm not sure if James is quite right in this, but Snape and Harry are. One shot.

Artists and Scientists (G?), A New Home (G?), and Domus Draconis (PG?), all by birgit. Jo has now said that Mark Evans isn't anyone important, but what if he were? Birgit does a good job of fleshing out Mark Evans as an OC who fits into canon. The first two fics are rather cutesy, but the last one is more nuanced. The first two fics are 5 chapters each; the last one is a novel length WIP.

As Before (PG) by Atrata. Harry becomes Snape's executioner. Ron doesn't understand. Angsty. One shot.

Babysitting Harry (G) by Potkins15. Sirius babysits little Harry (big surprise, I know). Simple, well-done fluff. One shot.

Balance (PG) by rabbit. This is one of the first fics I've ever read, and I think it's my favorite. It's also one of the most action-packed stories I've ever read, fan or original. The bad news is that it's a WIP that's most likely abandoned; the good news is that it's almost finished. Novel length.

Beautiful Boy (G?) by Poppy P. An incredibly sweet fic about baby!Harry's hair. Guaranteed to give you tooth decay. One shot.

Black Light (PG) by eumenides1. Harry talks to Mrs. Black. One shot.

Blood and hair (R) by Te. Harry, and Sirius, and Draco, and what is done during war. Somewhat disturbing implications. One shot.

Brighter Morning (PG) by GreenGecko. Harry wakes up in a strange place with a son he doesn't remember. Novel length fic.

Can't Be Held Responsible (PG-13) by Amy Fortuna. One or two crushes are mentioned. Minerva MacDonald reflects on one of the patients under her care. Wonderfully meta. One shot.

Catechism (R) by Dreamfall. Pure gen, though there's a bit of sexual abuse in the first chapter. What if the Dursleys were smarter? Smart enough to turn Harry against magic- against himself. A disturbing look at a Harry who has been taught from infancy to hate and fear everything he is. Dark, of course. Novel length WIP.

Chance Encounters (G?) by Arabella. The Dursleys go to London and drag Harry along, where he runs into a few people who will be important to him later in life. Cute. One shot.

Childhood Living (PG) by Dommichan. There's an accident in Potions class and Harry, Hermione, Ron, Draco, Pansy, and Blaise are all transformed into 5 year olds. What will Snape do with them? And what is Voldemort up to? Very funny and cute. One shot.

Cholerics (PG) by Sophie Richard. Phineas Nigellus helps Harry Potter. One shot.

Chosen (PG-13) by Gehayi. In which Draco has a special job among the Death Eaters, and Voldemort gets something he's always longed to have. Dark. One shot.

Clean (PG) by Ayla Pascal. Includes references to R/Hr. After the war is over, Harry still feels dirty. Unsettling. One shot.

The Compulsive Heroics Support Group (R) by DoubleEdgedSword. Harry fills out a survey and enters a support group. Meta, cross-over-ish, and quite amusing. One shot.

The cupboard (PG) by enahma. I went back and forth about whether or not to rec this. I think at times it bashes Sirius and James more than I'm comfortable with. However, other than that aspect I think this fic is very well done, so here it is. One shot.

Dandelion (PG-13) by Ivy Blossom. Draco runs into Harry and Hermione one day after they finish at Hogwarts, and they become unlikely friends. One shot.

Dawn Of A New World (PG-13) by SelDear. Harry looks out across the battlefield of his defeat of Voldemort and realises: victory shouldn't feel like this. One shot.

The Day thou Gavest (R) by Kulfold. Pure gen, but maybe SS/AD if you squint. Snape helps Harry lay his ghosts to rest. One shot.

Dead by Morning (PG) by Ivy Blossom. Harry lies in bed feeling guilty, glad that his godfather is there. Touching. One shot.

Death Before Dishonor (PG-13) by Robin4. An AU take on Harry's fifth year, with lots of the older folks thrown in. Novel length.

Decision (PG) by Ayla Pascal. During the War, Harry walks the halls of Hogwarts and thinks. Dark. Short one shot.

Derailed (PG?) by lethe medusa. A green-eyed boy picks Snape's pocket in Diagon Alley. AU, novel length fic.

Et Ne Nos Inducas In Tentationem (PG-13) by Hijja. Draco stops Harry from jumping off the Astronomy Tower, but not for the usual reasons. The last paragraph is chilling. One shot.

Father Figure (G?) by JiM. The setting is a Harry/OFC wedding, but I'd say it's pure gen. Snape is asked to stand for Harry Potter's wedding. One shot.

fictionkill (G) by fivil. Harry still remembers some things. Sad. One shot.

Filter (PG) by lupercali. With Sirius gone, Harry tries to understand his father's last friend. One shot.

The five deaths of Harry Potter (R) by jezzabe. Different people remember the way Harry Potter died, or didn't die. One shot.

The Five Steps (PG) by Ari. How Harry deals with Sirius' death. It feels very real. Two chapters.

Fourteen Fathoms (PG) by Vain. Snape discovers something disturbing about Harry and acts . . . like Snape. Angsty. One shot.

Framework (PG) by Morgan. How did Harry get his glasses anyway? It doesn't seem like the Dursleys would spring for them. One shot.

Giving Notice (PG-13) by Quoth the Raven. There's mention of a Special Friend for Harry, but it hasn't been expanded upon yet. One of the few good Harry suicide fics out there, told from various unusual viewpoints (Filch, Percy, and Professor Sprout, to name a few). WIP that hasn't been updated in a while. Novel length.

Golf Balls (G) by Wraith 11. Harry, Ron, and Ginny come up with a new game. Funny, if a bit mean-spirited. One-shot.

Good Enough (K) by Japonica. Petunia thinks about her burdensome nephew. One shot.

Hamartia (PG-13) by Scela Letifer. One mention of het right at the beginning. This fic features Twisted!Dumbledore's intricate schemes as well as what eventually becomes of them. Nice writing. One shot.

Harry Potter and the Book Wyrm (PG) by Jelsemium. It's a missing moment adventure set during Christmas in PoA; Harry falls through a door in the library invisible to everyone but him. Sweet. Two chapters.

Harry Potter and the Legacy of the Light (PG-13) by Gramarye. This fic crosses Harry Potter with The Dark is Rising and does an admirable job of living up to that expectation. Basically, it turns out that Voldemort threw his lot in with the Dark. Harry and five friends must fight against him with the help of Will Stanton, the last Old One and professor at Cambridge. Very well thought out and very well executed. Novel length fic, and be sure to read the short prequel as well.

Harry Potter and the Muggle Toy Store (PG) by MadisonS. Includes a reference to H/Hr. Harry, Hermione, and Ron go to a toy store and see themselves. I like Elsie. One shot.

Harry Potter and the Polka Dot Plague (PG) by Mariner. Harry Potter discovers why polka dots are evil. Severus Snape discovers why it's a bad idea to forge your medical records. Lucius Malfoy discovers why you shouldn't give surprise gifts to your boss. Funny. Chaptered fic.

Harry Potter's Divination Homework (G) by Tess3. Harry predicts what's going to happen to him over the next month. Amusing. First chapter is Harry's homework; second is the graded version.

Harry's Dragon (PG) by Mimiheart. Harry watches Pete the Magic Dragon at Mrs. Figg's house and comes up with an explanation for all the strange things that happen around him. Angsty. One shot.

Heat (PG) by Shadow Phantom. The AC breaks at the Dursley's, and Harry goes a bit nuts. Short one shot.

His Anxiety (PG) by Maeglin Yedi. Remus comes to see Harry. This fic is just heartbreaking. One shot.

Holes (PG) by lifeinwords. Good!Draco, trapped by Death Eaters, tries to get Harry to help them get out. Freaky, especially once you figure out what happened. One shot.

Home Is the Place Where (PG) by Kyra Cullinan. Petunia and Harry at the end of the world. It'll leave you breathless. One shot.

How Harry Started to Hate Mondays (PG) by Furiosity. Harry has a bad day. The llamas don't help at all. Goofy and endearing. One shot.

I Have a Rendezvous with Death by Paracelsus. Includes past R/Hr, but otherwise pure gen. Harry puts together a devious plan to defeat Lord Voldemort. Intricate plotting. This is the prequel to And Miles to Go Before I Sleep, but can be read independently. Novel length fic.

The Interview (G) by GatewayGirl. What sort of job skills does Harry really have? Amusing. One shot.

In Blood Only (M) by E.M. Snape. It's a Severitus fic, so of course there's past Snape/Lily, and there's also some Harry/Tonks and a few other minor het ships, though you can happily ignore them if you like. Harry finds out that Snape is his father, and gets drawn into various intrigues and revenge schemes. AU, novel length WIP, nearly finished.

Jehu (R) by Nathan Stack. Includes one or two references to relationships. Harry is out hunting Draco Malfoy with his crew. A wonderful, fantastical takeoff of Moby Dick, though you don't need to have read that book to appreciate this fic. One shot.

Knick-Knack-Paddywhack (G) by breed. Harry spends his sixth birthday at Mrs. Figg's house. Cute.

Learning to Uncurl (G?) by amorettea. Harry helps Snape accept his animagus form. I love the gentle humor and the adorable relationship between Harry and Snape in this fic. One shot.

The Legacy of Slytherin Sequence (G to PG-13) by Angie Astravic. Now AU for 5th year, Harry finds Chocolate Frog cards of himself, discovers he can turn into a snake, etc. I especially like that Angie uses Harry's Parselmouth abilities, which canon Harry seems to have forgotten all about. Chaptered fics and one shots.

The Legend of a Boy (PG) by zahra. Harry is a legend, with all that that implies. Angsty. Short one shot.

Lightning Has Just Struck My Brain (G?) by Dazzler. Harry starts noticing some things about Neville. Funny. One shot.

The Lost Boys (PG-13) by Ishafel. A look at the scars the wizarding world leaves on its children, specifically Draco, Ron, and Harry. Angsty. Chaptered fic.

March 21st, 1991 (G) by AnotherDreamer. Ten year old Harry plays alone on the playground as two others watch him. One shot.

Missa (G) by Mirabella. Mostly gen. A series of post-War vignettes. Bittersweet. One shot.

Mortal Comfort (PG) by teawithvoldy. Harry doesn't want to die alone. Angsty. One shot.

Mortal Peril (G) by srichard. It's listed as Harry/Remus pre-slash, but I would consider it pure gen without that warning. The Weasleys put a hand for Harry onto their clock, but it won't move off Mortal Peril. Good Harry and Remus interaction. One shot.

The Naked Quidditch Match (PG-13) by Anya. Some hints of OBHWF, but gen for the most part. Fred and George lose a bet, and so the Gryffindor Quidditch team has to play the next match naked! You can imagine the results. Told entirely through Mmail (wizard email), except the last chapter. Novel length.

nobody said it was easy (PG-13?) by lise. Professor Lupin comes back to teach Defence against the Dark Arts to the upper year. It's well written and gives great insight into Remus' character, as well as his students'. Long one shot.

Of Western Stars (PG) by neutral. This is an AU in which Sirius escapes to find Harry when he's six and a half. The Dursleys are rather OOC, and Harry can be Stu-ish at times, but it's a good read. Novel length.

One Potato, Two Potato (G) by Magical Me. Four year old Harry has to scrub potatoes. Angsty, but also cute. One shot.

Only Your Shadow (PG-13) by Phoenix-Song. It's sorta H/D pre-slashy. Draco, having told Voldemort where Harry would be, decides to follow him around for the day. It's a pretty good Draco redemption fic. One shot.

Out of the Blue and Into the Black (PG) by musesfool. Harry and Lupin come up with a plan. Short one shot.

The Persistence of Memory (PG-13) by neutral. This is an AU in which Harry Potter disappeared after grabbing the Triwizard Cup and never returned. Meanwhile, an amnesiac boy named James appears at an orphanage. Angsty. Novel length fic.

The Pop Goes the Weasel Trilogy (PG-13?) by durendal. Very humorous. Ron is a dopehead at 26. Lucius gives him a job in his organization. Draco is his secretary. This fic has a lot of great lines in it. Three fics; the entire thing is novel length.

Prayer of a Child (PG) by Indarae. Mention of past Lily/James and Lily/Severus, but other than that pure gen. This is a Severitus fic that is also AU in that the Longbottoms cracked and told the Lestranges that Harry was living at 4 Privet Drive. Well plotted and thought out. The author ended up deciding to finish the story, so now it's novel length.

The Reader (PG-13) by Aja. Mentions of R/Hr near the end, but that's it. Draco and Harry in sixth year, slowly being redeemed. This fic is very lyrical. Long one shot.

reflections (PG-13) by Lady Narcissa. Harry comes to terms with his godfather's death. Sad. One shot.

Resonance (PG-13) by GreenGecko. There are several het relationships, but the focus is gen. Harry's adventures from the middle of his Sixth Year to his Apprenticeship, including his defeat of Voldemort and his adoption by Snape. It does a good, IC job of showing this rather unlikely scenario. Novel length WIP, currently up to the end of Harry's Seventh Year.

Revenge (PG-13) by mary_re. How Harry learned to cast his first successful Cruciatus Curse. Dark. One shot.

A Saint of a Woman (K+) by Green Eyed Lady. Petunia tries to cope with two one-year-old boys. One shot.

Sands of Time (PG) by Ariana Deralte. A thousand years ago something inexplicable happened at Hogwarts. Now strange things are happening at Hogwarts again. Creepy, and far more disturbing than it has any right to be. Novel length.

Slouching Towards Bethlehem (R) by Kroki Refur. Sixth year AU; Harry is moping over Sirius' death, and Draco has disappeared. Novel length WIP, possibly abandoned.

Slow Fade (R) by bloodyfandom. Remus dies, but Harry is still alive. Subtle. Short one shot.

Some Things Are Better Left Unknown (G) by Giesbrecht. MWPP find a spell to send them forward in time to Harry's fifth year. I like the Somebody Else's Problem Charm and Giesbrecht does a good job of including all the implications of this trip. Chaptered fic.

Somewhat Lighter Sympathy (PG) by Hijja. Voldemort hires a hitman to take out Harry. Angsty. One shot.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (PG-13) by jacquez. Bits of implied Harry/Ginny here and there, but mostly gen. I'm not sure that I like Snape in this fic; he seems to know a lot more than I'd give him credit for. But I do like the concept, and most of the execution. Harry becomes apprenticed to Snape (just in general, not specifically for potions) for five years. I especially like their relationship. Novel length, WIP that may or may not be abandoned. Please note jacquez' disclaimer and distribution license.

Sorted Differently (PG) by magistera. A few other ways that Hogwarts students might be Sorted. Funny. One shot.

Spell Shock (PG-13) by Pouncer. Harry lands in St. Mungo's for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Angsty. One shot.

Stop All the Clocks (PG-13) by Lazy_neutrino. On Harry's sixteenth birthday, he and Lupin are still coming to terms with Sirius' death. But how do you cope when you've lost everything? Angsty with an interesting premise. One shot.

The Survivors (PG) by thistlerose. Harry comes to terms with his feelings about Remus and Sirius after OotP. Sad. One shot.

They Shook Hands (PG) by Dethryl. It's fairly obvious how the kids will pair off when they get older, but for now it's pure gen. This is another AU, this one asking what would have happened if Draco had befriended Harry in Madam Malkin's instead of putting him off. As a result, Harry is sorted into Slytherin, and everything changes. I like the OCs in this fic. Novel length, WIP. It's now at the beginning of Harry's second year.

Things That Don't Exist (PG-13) by shadoed. A Muggle notices a striking girl in the library. Short one shot.

Triumph of the Last Marauder (PG?) by Dazzler. Harry spends his summer restoring an old motorcycle, but it's much better than it sounds. One shot.

The Truth About Harry (PG-13) by Ivy Blossom. Ginny can't see Harry anymore. Cool premise. One shot.

'Twas Brillig (PG-13) by mary_re. Harry is captured by Death Eaters, and all he can think of is the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. One shot.

Two Weeks (PG-13) by florahart. Pure gen, other than wanking. Nine days after Vernon kicks it, and two weeks before Harry turns seventeen, there's no food in the house. But Harry's locked in, so someone will have to go with him to get it. Amusing, despite the situation. One shot.

Waiting (G) by Captain James. Perhaps R/S if you squint. Remus takes Harry to Grimmauld Place, where he'll have to spend the rest of the summer. Angsty. One shot.

Walking Shadow (PG-13) by Pogrebin. Harry has a past relationship with Gabrielle Delacour. Surreal and meta, as so many of Pogrebin's fics are. It's a story told backwards, of the second choice that Harry made, aided by Hermione. Weird, in a good way. Long one shot.

We Few, We Happy Few (PG-13) by 13YearOldEvilGenius. The War is going on, but Harry and Draco have the same sense of ennui. I like this; it's sort of a different take on both of them. One shot.

the whole of the moon (PG) by minervacat. Remus drinks cold tea every morning. Angsty. One shot.

The Wolf (PG-13?) by alibi_factory. Harry and Remus in Grimmauld Place, after OotP. Lyrical. One shot.

A Year Like None Other (M) by aspeninthesunlight. There's a bit of offscreen het. In Harry's 6th year, a letter from Surrey sends him down a path he'd never have walked on his own. Lots of Harry, Snape, and Draco interaction. Very long novel length WIP, updated regularly.

You That Have Whetted Consciousness (PG) by Sam Vimes/copperbadge. Harry tries to see Lupin. The conclusion is satisfying. One shot.

Your green-eyed boy (R) by Te. Harry figures out how to handle the Dursleys after OotP. Disturbing. One shot.
