Ball of Confusion

The leading web page dedicated to a song that was played just twice by Widespread Panic

Since I first heard Widespread Panic play "Ball of Confusion" on an old '89 tape, I've considered the song a Halloween classic. WSP hasn't played it since 10/31/89. I hope they bring it back some day. Can you imagine how they'd sound on it now? That's the only explanation I can offer for creating a web page tribute to WSP's version of "Ball of Confusion." Enjoy! Love, daniel

EVERYTIME PLAYED BY WSP
FROM EVERYDAY COMPANION VOL. 2

As far as I know, these are the only two times that WSP played "Ball of Confusion" in concert.

TESTIMONIALS FROM SPREADNET

Over the last few years, many Spreadnetters have commented on BALL OF CONFUSION and expressed a mixture of fear and joy at the idea of hearing it played again. Here are some sample quotes:

RAP ON, BROTHER, RAP ON

Will they ever bring it back?

With Y2Panic about to strike as the millennium approaches, the world is indeed a BALL OF CONFUSION. Some dire prophesies predict Panic will break out in a BALL OF CONFUSION between now and the actual beginning of the new millennium at 12:01 A.M., January 1st, 2001. Spooky thought, isn't it?
IF WSP PLAYS BOC ON---- APPROX. LTP--- TIME GONE----
New Years Eve 1999-2000 1355 shows 10 YRS, 2 MOS
Halloween 2000 1448 shows 11 YRS
New Years Eve 2000-2001 1468 shows 11 YRS, 2 MOS
JERRY C. SAID: "I asked Dave about this song and about the 10/31/89 show while backstage at The Backyard in Austin one time (1997). Dave said doing that song was a mistake, that they should never have tried to cover such a vocals-intensive song (loosely paraphrased). I told him I'd love to hear it again and he remarked that it wasn't likely to happen."

Bassist Dave Schools reportedly said the song had "too many words" for Panic to bring it back. But, Dave is known for his magical surprises. JB and Dave handled the vocals pretty well on Halloween 1989. The lyrics are poignant to this day, and I'd love to hear JB and Dave belt 'em out for the new millennium.

BALL OF CONFUSION (THAT'S WHAT THE WORLD IS TODAY)

People moving out, people moving in
Why, because of the color of their skin
Run, run, run but you sure can't hide

An eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth
Vote for me and I'll set you free
Rap on, brother, rap on

Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the preacher
And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the teacher
Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration
Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation

Ball of confusion
Yeah, that's what the world is today
Woo, hey, hey

The sale of pills are at an all time high
Young folks walking 'round with their heads in the sky
The cities ablaze in the summer time!
And oh, the beat goes on

Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul
Shooting rockets to the moon, kids growing up too soon
Politicians say more taxes, will solve everything!
And the band played on

So, round and around and around we go
Where the world's headed, nobody knows

Oh, great googalooga, can't you hear me talking to you?
Just a ball of confusion
Oh yeah, that's what the world is today
A- hey, hey

Fear in the air, tension everywhere
Unemployment rising fast, the Beatles new record's a gas
And the only safe place to live, is on an Indian reservation
And the band played on

Eve of destruction, tax deduction, city inspectors, bill collectors
Mod clothes in demand, population out of hand, suicide, too many bills
Hippies moving to the hills
People all over the world are shouting, "End the war!"
And the band played on

Great googalooga, can't you hear me talking to you.
Sayin'... Ball of confusion
That's what the world is today, hey, hey

Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya
Sayin'... Ball of confusion!

DESCRIPTION FROM THE TEMPTATIONS SONGS

Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today)
(4:04; the guys take turns at lead)
The opening bass solo is cool, with some echoing guitar to spice it up. If the Temptations ever sang a protest song against such injustices as racial discrimination and the Vietnam War, this was it. The world is a ball of even more confusion now than then.
