What to include in a Pet Disaster Kit

These are some suggestions as to what you could include to make a well-stocked pet disaster kit.  Earthquakes, floods, ice storms, hurricanes, tornados, torrential downpours, landslides, fires and other acts of God can make life a struggle... without having to worry about finding the items your pet needs to survive.  Many of these incidents happen without warning... so it's always good to be prepared in advance.  Be sure to include enough supplies to support more than one pet if you have them... and try to include about 5 days worth of rations.

What to include:

    • first-aid manual and kit
    • sling
    • muzzle (hurt animals may bite)
    • Elizabethan collar
    • scissors
    • antibacterial soap
    • antiseptic wipes
    • tweezers
    • safety pins
    • packets of animal food of your pet's brand (fill zipper sandwich bags full of rations of it)
    • container of clean drinking water, sealed tightly
    • band-aids (in case you're hurt)
    • Exacto (tm) knife (for cutting through collars, debris etc )
    • extra leash, harness/collar cage/carrier (if a really small pet or animal)
    • flares
    • needle nose pliers
    • spare pet name tags
    • small fire extinguisher
    • Copies of all documents for each animal (i.e. licenses, vaccination records and/or medications)
    • a toy to keep them occupied
    • treats that they enjoy
    • non spill bowls.  One for food, one for water
    • a small litter tray with litter (usually you can buy disposable ones at stores that are good for temporary use.  They are cardboard or plastic and come with some litter already included)
    • a syringe without a needle (good for squirting into injuries or eyes to rinse clean)
    • plastic gloves flashlight and extra batteries
    • your list of emergency phone numbers
    • blanket (stored nearby)
    • disposable instant cold packs
    • terry cloth towel
    • old bed sheets (good for tearing into bandages)
    • razor and blades (for shaving and cutting hair)
    • extra medication your pet may be on
    • disposable camera w/ flash (to document accident scene, any animals that may have been in contact with your animal, or unknown contagions, and for insurance purposes)

Be sure to read through your first aid manual so that you are aware of what steps should be
taken in a first aid situation.

Be aware of the disaster-type situations that are native to where you live... read up on
preparation techniques and what to do should a disaster strike.
