History of Tapestry
Tapestry will very much like to celebrate 3 years of providing young upstarts in performance, as well as giving established music mongers their due recognition from the public.
The first Tapestry, Tapestry Two002, was carried out in December 2002, as a brainchild of Camp Imagine ! that was held in 2001. The event was so successful that it was carried out again in 2003, and hence again this year in 2004.
The success of the event is shown by a comment made by a performer in 2003: ˇ°ˇ.thank you so much for giving my band, The Original Replicas, and i the opportunity to perform at Tapestry. Gigs as such don't come very often in Singapore , so we are extremely grateful for the "1 hour of fame" you and your fellow organizers have givenˇˇ. on behalf of The Original Replicas, I would like to commend you and your organization on a job well done. We thank you once again for giving us a chance for another shot at fameˇ ..ˇ± ~Darius, (bassist @ The Original Replicas)
Street performance has been an area of growth in the Singapore Arts scene and is extremely popular amongst the youth, both performers and audiences, as a celebration of energy, talents, and the diversity in our artistic preferences.
Having organized this event for the past two years, we feel that this is a viable umbrella to support youth arts and public performing arena development. We have constant feedback even from our current participating bands of the lack of performing venues for amateurs or start-up bands in Singapore . Most bands dissolve after the members graduate from their institutions because of lack of opportunities for them to be appreciated and develop. We want to allow these bands to have an opportunity to experience the feel of public response to their music, and give them exposure to public performance, thus giving them a chance to develop and grow further, and decide their musical directions.
At the same time, these performers have to work for charity. None of the proceeds will go their pocket, but to our charity of choice, The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund.
Therefore, through this project, we wish to not only promote the arts in Singapore , bring entertainment to the streets and appeal to youth of different interests, but at the same time raise funds for charity.
