The Missing Song.

Originally, there was to be a song called "Camouflage" in which Vera Charles sings a duet with Mame. The song involved Vera telling Mame that she should 'play the part' of a conventional mother figure. The song was cut because ACT ONE was fifteen minutes too long and thus the song and some other minor text was cut from the play.

One part of this song did survive though, the line in which Vera claims that she played Mother Cabrini during lent is a direct quote from the lyrics in the song.

Pre-Casting????

Jerry Herman took a liking to Angela Lansbury and wanted her to be Mame. The day before Ms Lansbury was meant to audition Jerry Herman taught her to sing IT'S TODAY and IF HE WALKED INTO MY LIFE. Because of this she was the only one to audition with actual material from the show.

Furthermore, at the actual audition Jerry Herman snuck into the orchestra pit and secretly became the pianist for her audition.
