FADE IN:
EXT PRISON - EVENING
Burly female guards mill about. The siren sounds, signalling for all the inmates to go inside.
In the rush and confusion, a single figure jumps over the wall - to the inside. She runs and joins a grroup entering the building.
INT PRISON - VISITATION AREA - CONTINUING
Two people talk through the glass wall separating them. ANGEL talks to FAITH (20's). Faith pulls her dark hair back. Fatigue shows clearly on her face.
ANGEL
How are you doing?
Faith nods slowly, but pain shows in her eyes.
FAITH
I'm all right. You?
ANGEL
It's almost time.
FAITH
What're you gonna do?
Angel sighs and shakes his head.
ANGEL
I don't know. Abbadon has been seen around town.
FAITH
Gonna kill him?
ANGEL
If I have to.
FAITH
He's a destroyer. You have to kill him.
The guard looks over at Faith, hearing the word "kill".
FAITH
(continuing; silently to guard)
Sorry.
(to Angel)
I'd help you if I could.
ANGEL
I know.
FAITH
How's Buff?
Angel looks away.
FAITH
That bad?
ANGEL
I've got to go.
FAITH
They're letting me out for a little while next month. Maybe we could ...?
Angel stands. A hint of a smile almost crosses his face.
ANGEL
Yeah.
Faith kisses her hand and presses it to the glass. Angel nods once and turns and leaves.
Faith hangs up the phone slowly and turns back to the guard, ready to go back to her cell.
CUT TO:
INT PRISON - FAITH'S CELL - NIGHT
Faith lies on her bed, staring at the ceiling. A small scrape catches her attention.
Harsh whispers from far away draw her close to her cell door. She strains to hear.
A muffled scream pierces the dead stillness of the prison air.
Faith turns back to her cot, torn inside. She looks out toward the darkness. She hears struggling. Obviously someone's in trouble.
Emotions contort her face.
FAITH
Come on. One more month and you can get out of here for a while.
She paces her cell. Another muffled scream.
FAITH
Hell.
She kicks open her cell door, shattering the lock. She turns to look at the guard post. Empty.
Faith runs into the darkness.
CUT TO:
INT PRISON - LAUNDRY - CONTINUING
Four prisoners and one burly guard surround a thin woman. The woman stares up at them from her kneeling position on the ground.
Barely stifled sobs emerge from somewhere in the center of the cruel circle.
PRISON GUARD
They said you were a fighter. Come on, wench. Show us what you've got.
One of the prisoners kicks the woman in the side. She goes to the ground, gasping.
Faith rounds the corner and throws open the door, rattling its hinges.
The Guard turns to face this new threat.
PRISON GUARD
You just got yourself another six months.
FAITH
Leave her alone.
PRISON GUARD
Who's going to stop us? You?
Faith smiles tightly.
FAITH
My pleasure.
Faith leaps up and kicks the Guard in the jaw, spinning her around.
A prisoner rushes at Faith, swiping down with long fingernails. Faith ducks under the blow and hits with a left to the midsection.
Two down. The Woman pulls herself up to watch Faith battle the five other women. Faith holds her own for a minute, but more blows start landing on her. She goes to her knees.
Blood trickles from Faith's mouth. A kick lands in her ribs. She falls to the ground.
Behind the group, the woman rises to her feet. Her face is cloaked by shadow.
WOMAN
I think that is quite enough.
The guard turns back to face the Woman.
PRISON GUARD
Back from the dead, eh?
The Guard pulls her stick and swings it at the Woman. The Woman catches her arm and stops it. She bends the Guard's arm backwards; the stick falls to the ground.
WOMAN
I never left.
The Woman throws the Guard across the room.
Faith curls up on the ground, trying to shield herself. She watches in stupefied amazement as the Woman quickly dispatches the four prisoners.
The Woman kneels next to Faith and puts her face in the light. It is distorted, no longer human. But distinctly Vampire.
The Woman takes Faith's chin and looks in her rolling eyes. She laughs - an insane cackle. She dabs the blood off Faith's mouth with her finger - then licks it.
WOMAN
Hello, Faith. I'm Drusilla. We need to talk.

INT RUN DOWN HOTEL (ANGEL'S BASE) - NIGHT
WESLEY and CORDELIA pore over books on Demons and other supernatural wierdness.
Cordelia chews on a pencil as she reads.
CORDELIA
Hey, can you toss me that highligher?
Wesley stops, looks up from his book, and gives her a withering glare.
WESLEY
You do not use a highlighter on the Book of Tubal Canita.
Wesley takes the book from Cordelia and shows the worn cover.
WESLEY
I searched for over five years to find this. It's one of only three copies left in the world.
CORDELIA
What? Amazon.com not have it in stock?
Angel enters.
WESLEY
There is very little new information on Abbadon. What we have are primarily Hebrew and Aramaic records. But nothing new.
ANGEL
And the Scroll?
WESLEY
Sorry. No.
CORDELIA
Hey, what about that book ... wait, no, we already have that one.
WESLEY
Are you ... ?
ANGEL
I'm fine.
Angel opens the weapons locker and pulls a sword and a crossbow from it.
CORDELIA
Out to kill something for dinner?
WESLEY
Shall I call Gunn?
CORDELIA
We could be backup.
ANGEL
No.
Angel shuts the locker and looks at Wesley and Cordelia.
ANGEL
Hold down the fort.
Angel exits.
Cordelia looks at Wesley and shrugs.
WESLEY
Perhaps we should ...
CORDELIA
Right behind you.
They run to the weapons locker and grab weapons.
CUT TO:
EXT HIGHWAY - NIGHT
A couple, TYLER and ANDREA walk along the road. Tyler carries a satchel over his broad shoulders. Andrea holds a large flashlight in her hand. Her reddish hair catches the light of the dim stars.
In the distance, the glow of a large city brightens the horizon.
A blue van pulls up behind them. Tyler turns around and shields his eyes from the glare of the headlights.
ANDREA
Who is it?
TYLER
It's him.
ANDREA
Well, it's about time.
A short, red haired man approaches.
TYLER
We've been waiting for you, Oz.
CUT TO:
INT SUNNYDALE - THE BRONZE - NIGHT
Giles pulls a book from a shelf. Subdued music plays in the background.
BUFFY (25 yrs), WILLOW (25 yrs), and DAWN (18yrs), sit around a table. Three cups of coffee, and one cup of tea keep them going.
GILES
It says here, in Bramhurst's Doctrine of Demonic Lore, that Apollyon is not the Destroyer, but only a messenger of destruction.
BUFFY
So how do we kill him?
WILLOW
Maybe we don't kill him. Maybe we just, you know, vanquish him to another dimension.
BUFFY
Will, he's a demon. We kill him.
Giles sits down.
GILES
No, actually Willow may be right with this one. We don't always have to kill the messenger of ill tidings.
BUFFY
Even if he's bringing the end of all life as we know it?
WILLOW
We don't know that.
Buffy holds up her book.
BUFFY
It says it right here.
Dawn looks up from the table.
DAWN
What if it'll be a better world?
GILES
What do you mean?
DAWN
How could it get any worse than this?
Dawn holds up a finger to stop Buffy's comment. Buffy shuts her mouth.
DAWN
I mean, look at it. My sister goes out every night fighting demons and vampires, killing who knows how many yucky things, and I get scared.
Buffy reaches out and touches Dawn's hair.
BUFFY
Aw, Dawn ...
DAWN
No, I mean it. After Mom left, you're all I've got. And I don't want you to get hurt.
BUFFY
I won't. I always come back.
DAWN
But what if you don't? What if one time there's a monster that's too tough? What if you can't win? What if you don't come back?
Buffy meets her sister's gaze. Tears well up in Dawn's eyes. She looks down at the table. A teardrop falls to the tabletop.
Willow and Giles look at Buffy, hoping that she'll give the right answer.
BUFFY
Dawn. Dawn, look at me.
Dawn slowly raises her eyes.
BUFFY
When Mom left, she told you that everything was going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay. I promise you that. All right?
Buffy leans forward and pulls Dawn's head to hers. They touch foreheads. Dawn nods slightly.
BUFFY
I get scared, too. Look at me. I'm twenty-five. Most Slayers don't get my age. I should have been dead a long time ago. But I'm not.
A small smile creeps onto Dawn's lips.
DAWN
'Cuz Hell wouldn't take you-
BUFFY
And St. Peter's afraid I'll take over. Yeah.
Giles interjects, lifting a finger. He looks at her ear.
GILES
Buffy, would you mind if I ...?
Buffy pulls a pencil from behind her ear and hands it to Giles.
BUFFY
But I'll need it back. Never know when some ugly vampire's going need a number two through the heart.
WILLOW
I wonder if they ever get lead poisoning?
Giles thumbs through another book.
GILES
You know, there are a lot of things that we don't know about this final battle. If only we had the Scroll of Aberijan.
WILLOW
Wesley told you he'd send it, didn't he?
GILES
Yes, well. It hasn't arrived.
BUFFY
Who wants chocolate?
Willow puts up her hand. Dawn meets Buffy's earnest look. Giles is off in another mental place.
BUFFY
Giles? Chocolate?
GILES
Oh, yes. Um ...
BUFFY
Yes?
Giles makes a sprinkling motion with his hand.
BUFFY
Sprinkles. Got it.
Buffy goes to the snack bar to get the stuff.
DAWN
Giles, is she going to survive?
Giles takes off his glasses to clean them.
GILES
She's only going to get ...
(sighs)
I don't know. The prophesy is very vague.
DAWN
I don't want her to die.
WILLOW
None of us do, Dawn.
DAWN
But she will, won't she?
Buffy returns, bearing chocolate and donuts. She looks at their worried faces.
BUFFY
I hope chocolate didn't just become one of the plagues in that prophesy.
CUT TO:
EXT HIGHWAY - NIGHT
OZ (mid-20's) cocks his head curiously at Tyler and Andrea.
OZ
You're not from around here.
TYLER
Neither are you.
OZ
You know me.
ANDREA
I am sorry about your friend.
OZ
She wasn't my friend.
(aggravated)
Look, Willow's a big girl. She can do what she wants.
ANDREA
What about you?
OZ
I make do.
TYLER
Living in a van is hardly making do.
Oz gestures back to the van.
OZ
I'm leaving.
TYLER
You have something for us.
OZ
No.
Oz walks quickly back toward the van. Tyler follows right on his heels. Oz whirls around, transforming into a werewolf. He swings his claws at Tyler.
Tyler catches his arm mid-swing. They freeze for a moment, neither able to move the other. Then Tyler pushes the arm down. Oz changes back to human form.
OZ
Who are you?
ANDREA
We are players in this, just like you.
CUT TO:
INT PRISON - NIGHT
Faith follows Drusilla across the open courtyard.
FAITH
They'll see us.
DRUSILLA
You can't fight destiny.
Faith pulls Drusilla into the shadows on the far wall.
FAITH
I kill people like you.
DRUSILLA
You don't kill anyone. You've got a soul now.
FAITH
Who are you?
DRUSILLA
I know who I am.
Drusilla closes her eyes, seeing a vision.
DRUSILLA
And I know who you are.
FAITH
Who?
Drusilla giggles madly and puts her finger to her lips.
DRUSILLA
It's a secret. Shh.
They creep toward the outside gate. Two vampires stand there on guard.
They nod to Drusilla as she passes. They eye Faith hungrily.
DRUSILLA
They were sent to kill you.
FAITH
Most are.
DRUSILLA
So was I.
FAITH
Bring it on.
Faith tenses for battle. Drusilla looks at her in amusement.
DRUSILLA
How precious.
Faith backs up a step, caught completely off guard.
DRUSILLA
Shall we?
Drusilla walks to the gate. It opens. A line of demons walls the path to a waiting car.
The car door opens. Drusilla climbs in. The back door opens for Faith.
A blonde fellow, SPIKE, sits in the driver's seat. A cigarette hangs from his mouth. He looks at Faith, waiting for her to get in the car.
SPIKE
Well? Look, I don't care one bloody whit if you want to stay here and rot.
DRUSILLA
You mustn't speak that way. Come along, Faith. Destiny awaits.
FAITH
This is wigging me out.
Faith climbs in. The door shuts. The car races away.
CUT TO:
INT RUN DOWN HOTEL (ANGEL'S BASE) - NIGHT
Wesley and Cordelia sit back to back in chairs in the center of the floor. They both wield deadly weapons. But they are far from alert. Wesley's head droops sleepily.
Cordelia nods off. As her head drops, she snaps awake. She elbows Wesley.
CORDELIA
You're snoring.
WESLEY
I thought you found it endearing.
CORDELIA
Not when our lives are in danger.
WESLEY
There is nothing I can see putting us in-
Cordelia winces, then grimaces in pain. Her head feels like it's splitting apart.
CORDELIA
Ah, ah, aagh.
Cordelia falls the the floor, clutching her head. She screams.
INT LOFT (VISION) - DAWN
Faith and Buffy battle. Buffy looks at Angel. He roars. Angelus (his Vampire self) glares at both Buffy and Faith.
Faith knocks Buffy down and plunges a dagger into Angel's chest.
INT RUN DOWN HOTEL (ANGEL'S BASE) - CONTINUING (REALITY)
Cordelia gasps. Wesley helps her to a sitting position.
WESLEY
What did you see?
CORDELIA
(whimpering)
No.
WESLEY
Cordelia. Breathe. Deep breaths. Like this.
Wesley takes several deep breaths.
CORDELIA
Angel.
WESLEY
You saw Angel?
Horror fills Cordelia's eyes.
CORDELIA
Faith killed him.
CUT TO:
EXT SEWER - NIGHT
Angel drops down into the sewer tunnel. GUNN (late 20's), one of Angel's closest allies, drops in after him. They both hold crossbows.
GUNN
Says it's here.
ANGEL
He is.
GUNN
Can't see nothing.
ANGEL
Smell.
A wave of putrescence assaults them.
GUNN
Point for you.
ANGEL
This way.
They splash through the stench toward their destination.
INT SEWER - CAVERN - CONTINUING
Angel and Gunn emerge into a huge cavern. Several sewer tunnels open here. The water flows into a huge basin in the center of the cavern.
In the center of the basin, a huge mound of fetid garbage and rotting material rises up. Atop the mound, a corpulent demon rests his sagging mass.
BEL-SHAROTH, the demon, smiles down at the two small figures - Angel and Gunn.
BEL-SHAROTH
Figments, or not, my imagination sees the souled neck-biter.
ANGEL
"Bel-Sharoth, we beseech thy esteemed wisdom. We desire of thee a boon, that we may become as thee, and delight in fatness."
GUNN
Speak for yourself. I like my abs the way they are.
ANGEL
"Much rottenness and fetid waste be forever yours, O Devourer of all that is repulsive."
GUNN
You makin' this up?
Angel pulls out a scrap of paper from his pocket and reads it.
ANGEL
"Plague and pestilence be upon all that oppose the way of rot and decay. For all those things must surely come to pass."
Bel-Sharoth laughs. His entire mass jiggles in corpulent amusement. Bits of rotten flesh fall from his sagging limbs.
BEL-SHAROTH
Aragox has always spoken of you, Souled One. He warned that you would seek me out to destroy my kingdom.
Angel steps forward. Beneath his feet, fetid steam rises up from the rotting masses of unseen waste.
ANGEL
You know the name of Abbadon.
BEL-SHAROTH
The Destroyer.
ANGEL
I ask a name.
Gunn wrinkles his nose. A wave of stink hits him as Bel-Sharoth shift his position to look closer at Angel.
BEL-SHAROTH
The Change is upon us.
ANGEL
A name.
Gunn glances behind him. Green eyes glitter behind him in the tunnel.
GUNN
Angel, company.
BEL-SHAROTH
You have the Key?
ANGEL
I have it.
Slithering sounds rise in intensity and frequency from the tunnel.
GUNN
Angel, man, we've got company.
BEL-SHAROTH
Threefold shall be their names, but Ixthusael is the head. The tail is Abbadon. The belly is a viper. A serpent.
ANGEL
May all that is filth be yours.
Angel inclines his head and turns back to Gunn.
ANGEL
You have it?
GUNN
Got it.
ANGEL
Go!
Gunn tosses a flash-bang grenade into the tunnel. They race in after it. It explodes just ahead of them. They shield their eyes and push past the horde of assembled demons.
The demons scream in agony as their sight is taken from them.
Behind them, Bel-Sharoth roars in anger.
BEL-SHAROTH
Never will you escape, Souled One! You shall rot and be mine!
CUT TO:
EXT HIGHWAY - DAWN
Oz drives northward. The rising sun is on the right of them. Tyler looks out the window as Andrea explains the situation to Oz.
OZ
That's highly unlikely.
ANDREA
So you admit the possibility.
OZ
Does Buffy know?
TYLER
Not yet. We need to speak with her again.
OZ
So you've seen her before.
TYLER
When I found Jonathan.
OZ
He knows?
ANDREA
It's the end of the world. All the pieces have to be in place.
OZ
Why me?
Tyler and Andrea exchange a quick look. A small smile creeps onto Tyler's face.
TYLER
You've got a van.
CUT TO:
