MAIL ART HIT PARADE 2000

On Friday 17th November at 11 am, the MAIL-ART HIT PARADE 2000 took place, opening the 7th. Biennial of Havanna in the old part of the city. The event was so important that the caretakers of the Biennial asked me to repeat it the following day, due to the opening of a new section of the exhibition of the Biennial in the Cabin, one of the citadels that protects the approaches to the City Port.

Our objectives were fulfilled: taking the mail-art out into the streets, where the people are, in a kind of living exhibition; bringing together the long-distance communication, intrinsic to mail-art, and the direct communication with the Cuban people and trying to integrate the audience to the net by giving postcards as a present in order for them to participate and send them back to my address. Another important aspect was to reaffirm the disinterested character of mail-art by giving all the masks and costumes received to those who took part in the parade, except the ones that the Australian artist David Dellafiora lent me. Last, it must be highlighted the legitimization our art achieved by opening the Biennial in front of numerous authorities and art critics from all over the world, including Pierre Restany, in representation of the UNESCO.

I want to thank the Wifredo Lam Centre from Cuba, the students of the first cycle of the National Academy of Fine Arts "San Alejandro" of Havanna, the Association of Bank Employees of Uruguay, David Baptiste Chirot, the Australian artist David Dellafiora, AUMA (Action Urgent Mail-Art) and Alexis Abreu, the Cuban artist who took part in the event. Also to all the participant mail-artists.
 

Besides the Biennial, I made a performance on Tuesday 14th, where I read an anthology of experimental poetry, in the "October 10" Gallery organized by the Cuban poet Raydel Araoz, with poems by Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Philadelpho Menezes, Guillermo Deisler, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Jose Lino Grunewald, Julien Blaine, Jean-Claude Moineau, Jean-François Bory, Klaus Groh, Bartolomé Ferrando, Fernando Aguiar, Bob Cobbing and my own.

GRAN DESFILE DE ARTE CORREO

El viernes 17 de Noviembre 2000 a las 11 hs. de la mañana se realizó el GRAN DESFILE DE ARTE CORREO 2000 abriendo la 7ma. Bienal de La Habana en el casco viejo de la ciudad. El acontecimiento fue tan relevante que los curadores de la Bienal me pidieron que la volviera a realizar al día siguiente, en instancias en que se inauguraría un nuevo sector de exposiciones de la Bienal en La Cabaña, uno de los fuertes coloniales que cierran la Bahía de la ciudad. Se cumplieron los objetivos propuestos: sacar el arte correo a la calle, allí donde está la gente, en una suerte de exposición viviente; conjuntar la comunicación a distancia, propia del arte correo, con la comunicación directa con el pueblo e intentar integrar al público a la red repartiendo postales a intervenir y enviar a mi dirección postal.
Otro aspecto importante fue reafirmar el carácter desinteresado del arte correo regalando todos las máscaras y disfraces recibidos a los que participaron en el desfile, menos los que el artista australiano David Dellafiora me prestó. Por último, hay que destacar la legitimización que logró nuestro arte inaugurando nada menos que la Bienal frente múltiples autoridades y críticos de arte de todo el mundo, incluyendo a Pierre Restany, en representación de la UNESCO.

Quiero agradecer al Centro Wifredo Lam de Cuba, a los alumnos del primer ciclo de la Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" de La Habana, a la Asociación de Empleados Bancarios del Uruguay, a David Baptiste Chirot, al artista australiano David Dellafiora, a AUMA (Acción Urgente Mail Art) y a Alexis Abreu, artista cubano que participó en el evento. También, por supuesto, a todos los participantes.

Al margen de la Bienal realicé, el martes 14, un recital de poesía experimental, en la Galería "10 de Octubre" organizado por el poeta cubano Raydel Araoz, con poemas de Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Philadelpho Menezes, Guillermo Deisler, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Jose Lino Grunewald, Julien Blaine, Jean-Claude Moineau, Jean-François Bory, Bartolomé Ferrando, Klaus Groh, Fernando Aguiar, Bob Cobbing y míos propios.
