A fund-raising event for The Australian Lung Foundation in collaboration with the Tasmanian Homing Pigeon Federation and the TT-Line Company.

The Contest

A race across Bass Strait between the catamaran operated by the TT-Line Company and one hundred racing pigeons released by the Tasmanian Homing Pigeon Federation. The revised Bass Strait crossing is 280 km, from Port Welshpool to George Town. The catamaran crosses this in 4 hours (70 kph). Racing pigeon events are held across a similar passage and the pigeons achieve a similar velocity. The changeable weather conditions across Bass Strait affect the sailing of the catamaran and the flight of the pigeons. The race outcome would be close and unpredictable.

Date

The precise date is yet to be determined. The Bass Strait catamaran service is due to re-start in mid-late December 2000. We are aiming for 16/12/00. Pigeon release from Port Welshpool when Catamaran sails.

Importance of the Event

Helping The ALF raise funds for medical research.

Promoting the TT-Line fast ferry service across Bass Strait, the sport of Pigeon Racing, tourism to Tasmania and Incat Australia (Tasmania’s catamaran manufacturer).

Using Bass Strait, which gives Tasmania its identity as an island state and which also causes a costly separation from "mainland" Australia.

Comparing this new technology with the oldest method of transporting messages by racing pigeons. This adds a bit of historical spice to the event.

Promotion

Extensive promotion is planned via media outlets in Tas & Vic and within the participating organisations. We hope this will become an annual event.

Fund-raising & Prizes

Groups are requested to assist with the sale of Cat & Pigeon raffle tickets for a prize draw which is dependent on the race outcome

The sale of promotional T-shirts, caps & stickers

Corporate sponsorship of the event

Trophy for fastest pigeon and certificates for place getters & all participating lofts
