LungNet Information Exchange 2000

A strong contingent of LungNet members from the 3 Tasmanian groups met at this 2nd annual function. It was held at Inveresk Railyards Reception Centre, Invermay Rd, Launceston, on Thursday, 19th October 2000, from 10.30 am to 3.00 pm. The overall attendance was about 80 people.

Most of those who attended will agree that it was excellent value for a $5 fee. We received tea & coffee on arrival, from friends who LUSTed over us. We were whipped into shape by David Schmidt, physiotherapist, who convinced us of the "Benefits of Exercise". Lorraine Woods, pharmacist, then spun her magic lotions and potions, and cautioned us about "Mixing Medications" ourselves and their possible "Side Effects". Food for thought was followed by a scrumptious Lunch provided by Cliff Walters and his lion-hearted friends from Hadspen South Esk Inc Lions Club. The company of new and old friends aided our digestion. Our appetites were wet further by a joint presentation on "Holidays - Getting about with Disabilities", by Sandra Neale, director, The Independent Living Centre, Launceston and by Cindy Hollings, occupational therapy manager LGH. Now, there was nothing stopping us from getting up and away! And if we should stumble and fall, we learnt where we can receive all the care and comfort we need at Philip Oakden House, courtesy of Ronita Foss, clinical nurse manager and Dr Rob Jaffrey, medical practitioner, who gave us a comforting duo performance about "Hospice Carers – What can they do?"

The proceedings at the tramsheds were kept "on track" yet again by MC John Bruce, with his masterly charm and wit. Kathleen Burgess assisted with the statewide co-ordination of the event and to her credit it all went like clock-work. Jim Markos tried to woo us into buying or selling thousands of raffle tickets in a contest between pigeon power (alias Plucky Pigeon) and boat power (alias Crafty Cat), but didn’t have a single ticket to give out! - See article elsewhere for those who were wooed!

The meeting finished with a rush for the door prizes. Then it was time for a spot of tidying up, a fond farewell to friends, a trip home (lengthy for some) and a well-earned rest for all of us. Many thanks to all who helped and attended. Until we meet again. Cheers from Alfie. (Who is Alfie? Find out next year)

LungNet Information Exchange 2001

Another Seminar is planned for October 2001. At this stage we are still considering topics and venues. Any group with a topic they would like to hear about should contact John Bruce on 6393 7217. Do not worry if you don’t have a speaker or information on the topic - we will find it.
